"Criminal Speeding" in Maine.... need some help guys...
Just got back with my girlfriend from Portland, ME, doing the round trip (1000km) in one day to see some relatives.
I got caught doing 101mph on I95 in a 65mph limit. The officer was rather polite, and since I'm from Quebec, Canada, and was with my girlfriend, he did not arrest me; however, I have been assigned to appear in court in march.
What are the usual fines? He told me that speeding 30mph over the limit is jail time normally. What is the typical settlement for this?
Now of course I'm totally responsible for that, and do not complain about the police doing its job... I just want to get out of this as easily as possible.
Thanks guys...
Guillaume
I've also seen a "model citizen" with a clean driving record, good manners, a good lawyer, and a good bit of luck get off with only a $300 charge and 6pts. Bastard didn't even come to court.
Try looking into lawyers near the courthouse. Prices may very from $300 to $2500 within the same building so shop around.
Considered "driving to endanger" the penalties for a Class E offense are listed in paragraph 3 under "penalties" here. I do not see mandatory jail, but I do see suspension of license.
Hire a lawyer.
You're on foreign soil, both literally and figuratively, and need that local "equalizer." It will be worth every penny.
Oddly, Matt Dillon was just picked up here in Vermont for the same thing. They're planning on throwing the book at him here.

I had the opporutnity to sit through traffic court end-to-end recently and everyone was either deferred, dismissed ( very few) or plead to a lower charge ( the vast majority). You need a local insider. At minimum see the prosecutor ahead of time - usually he begins to hold court 30 min before show time.
You must appear.
