Re: tranny removal - I just finished this on my 2001 a6 2.7t....
I ended up dropping the engine/tranny/subframe all together. It's possible to pull just the tranny, but I think that is for someone very experienced and with the right tools.
There's not much info out there specific to the a6, but theres a couple write-ups on pulling an engine for an s4. I basically followed those, with the exeption that we have to drop our subframe with it bc of the larger auto tranny as compared to a manual. Here is one of the s4 procedures:

I did this in my garage on jackstands with a cherry picker. Not fun, but do-able.
