Default 2002 A6 w/ 71k miles, is rumbling/shaking when below 3k RPM
also same thing happens while idling, etc. Is this a timing belt issue? Any info is appreciated.

Probably not. Sounds more like a coil pack. Any codes?

will misfires cause a CEL? id put my money there, but no codes seems odd

No codes and no CEL are two different things. Hard to say for sure.
