Power steering moaning and groaning after drive in low temps

Quiet as a mouse coming out of the garage. Drive it in 10 degree weather or lower and in a couple of minutes noisy as heck. Reservoir is full, but noticed a lot of bubbles. Flush the fluid maybe?

No, just clean the suction screen to the pump, located in the reservoir.

I wouldn't rule out a fluid change

Mine was moaning in normal temps and I did a flush and refill and now it is quiet - even in cold weather. I used the "turkey baster" method, emptied the reservoir, refilled, did it again.

New fluid is seldom a bad idea. If you haven't changed the fluid it might be worth a try.

Can't hurt much, but won't clean the filter screen either. A starved pump is the usual cause.

My dealer bled the air out and the cold weather groaning went away.

No way to bleed the air out! He tightened the hose clamps on the pump's suction line...

preventing air entry. Negative pressure because the filter screen was not clean.

Thanks all. Does the screen come out of the reservoir to clean? I can't see it until I take some fluid out. Kind of dirty so I'll probably change that as well.

By the way, could a clogged screen also cause cold weather start no-power steering woes (daughters B5 A4)? Had the pump replaced on that one, but still have the same problem. It's a bear to steer for a couple of minutes, then just breaks loose while driving.
