2000 A6 4.2 - lots of errors any chance someone can point where to start?

2000 A6 4.2 - lots of errors any chance someone can point where to start?
I have a friend that owns a 2000 A6 with the 4.2 who is having alot of problems right now and I really appreciate any help as to where to start the troubleshooting.
A little background...
- about 103,000 miles
- Timing belt most likely hasn't been done (havn't checked with the dealer records)
- Can't see how this matters but the steering pump is shot
Now onto the problems. When you start the engine it had a very very rough idle but no odd noises. When you give it gas it simply dies. I didn't try putting it into gear and didn't start it a second time. These are the codes that showed up.
I did clear the codes before I started it but the flashing engine light showed up almost immediately after I started it.

16502 - Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor (G62): Signal too High - Intermittent
16684 - Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected
16687 - Cylinder 3 Misfire Detected
16686 - Cyl. 2 Misfire Detected
16685 - Cyl. 1 Misfire Detected
16689 - Cyl. 5 Misfire Detected

I'd guess the random misfires are bad coilpacks, but...

I was thinking the CTS too. Didn't see any vacuum line problems.
One thing I should have mentioned before was that he has had this issue once before (about two weeks ago) and it went away after he put some of that alchohol (water drier) stuff in the fuel. I told him for now to run (idle) it a little to see if it could just be more water in the lines.
