Default A6 really sluggish at pickup/first gear

I have been searching through the forum but cant seem to find anything that might adress this issue. Also Stoney's link doesnt have anything on this therefore any ideas, thoughts or suggestions will be appreciated.

Its an A6 4.2l and it drives great however its really really slow at pick up when driving. If you engage it in gear and even floor it it wont jump to it. It cruises but once it gets going it flies and I know thats not good. However, when you put the gear in reverse it jump at the bit like its ready to fly down the road in reverse. The kind of response you would expect when you put it in drive. Has anyone come across anything symptons like this and can you point me in the right direction.

Also the gear indicators in the display do not show which gear its in and im wondering if this is part of the problem or its just the display unit going bad. Thanks a lot guys.

You need to pull codes. This sounds suspiciously like limp mode.

But he's only complaining about it in 1-2. would limp do that?

Default also all the gears are lit up on the display unit...

I dont have a vag-com tool to pull codes so I am looking for someone in my area to help me pull codes. Ill let you know if I am successful in that search and what codes I get.

Default Definitely limp mode. I hope you haven't been driving it too long this way.

Tough on the trans starting out in second all the time, and the engine revs pretty high because it doesn't shift into the upper gears. Stop driving the car if possible and get this checked asap.

You might start by looking under the passenger side carpet to make sure that the TCU isn't swimming around inside its black box. Just checking the exterior of the box is not enough; you need to open the box (step 3, iirc) to verify that it is dry inside.

hmm for me I havent been driving it because I just got the temp tags. For the previous owner I cant tell but i bet he has done a bit of driving on it a bit. He is not a car person just likes them from point a to b purposes so cross my fingers no major damage has been done. Ill start with the TCU box check first. thanks.

Default I've learned something today.

On a D2 A8/S8 limp is 4th gear only, which is stupid. It should be 3rd gear.
