Default Need some advice

Purchased a 2000 A8L about a month ago. Everything has been fine with the car. Tuesday check engine light came on. Dropped it off with a local mechanic (Long Island)- didn't want to take any chances. Pulled the following codes -16826 (Evap emmission control) - 17538 (Bank 2 long term fuel trim)- 17536 (Bank 1 long term fuel trim)(system to lean). He then reset the board. Well the check engine light came on again this evening. Is this something that needs an immediate resolution or do I have time to get it to a dealer? Don't think the local guy can handle it.

Sounds like you prabably have some sort of vacuum leak causing both banks to be lean. A lean condition is usually not something that has to be taken care of tomorrow, but long term wise, you can damage your valves and or catalytic converters. Take it in and get if fixed.
It doesnt matter where you take it, as long as the tech is qualified and experienced.

Thanks - I did a search on the code numbers in the forum and it looks like a common problem is simply the gas cap is loose. If that doesn't work, then possibly a leak in one of the air intake components - MAF seems to be worst case.

Default code 16826

Before I got my vag I too had a diagnosed code 16826. The LI shop replaced the evaporative emission control. Cost was 195 all.

At times I do get a lean code but think it is from the gas cap too.

I'd be interested to know the name of the shop and if you'd recommend them. I've only been on LI for a year and don't have any experience with anyone other than a local guy who works on my wife's car.

Default oh sure

The shop is German Auto Repair (in Amityville) and the owner/tech is Ken Rabb. He has a large number of porsche's that he works up for racing, however, he does complete engine rebuilds (he has a pair of 928's). When I was last there he had an A6 and my A8 as well as three other porsche's. He works on a schedule basis only. Meaning you call and make an appointment. This is not too bad but what if you have an emergency? SOL
I must say he is a little to himself (not to talkative) but nice, sincere and reasonable. Meaning, I felt I got good value with the money I was spending. BTW I have the ross-tech so I can change the tranny code to the more sporty 00011 and such.

I'm in Sayville, so Amityville is great. I'll try giving him a call. I'd be interested in trying out the 00011 code if you wouldn't mind getting together one day. Just let me know when it would be convenient for you. You can shoot me an e-mail.

This problem can be tedious to track and fix. The EVAP leak usually is at the cover of fuel pump and sending unit in fuel tank. This can be accessed via cover in car trunk. The replacement cap & seal costs $20. This should fix the problem. If the CEL comes back on with similar codes then you need to check N-80 purge valve ($100) and LDP Pump ($150). If you are interested in more details please let me know. I would appreciate if you could post your eventual resolution of the problem.
