Got my tranny back
Parts $2339, Fluids $ 230 tranny and diff. -- pretty high, Labor $ 805 12.25 hours, Tax $ 236, Total $3610
This is way cheaper than the dealer, but still pretty steep.
Final cost of 90K maintenance:
My portion $ 7,380, Dealer portion $13,000 for short block/cyl head, etc., Total $20,380.
Would have been cheaper to replace the car, but with the dealer paying over 60% of the cost I am not totally bummed out. I am hoping for another 100K out of it. After driving several other vehicles while mine was being serviced I realized what a great car the A8 is. Nice to have it back!

After I had the dealer change the fluid for the first time at 90k it immediately developed what the dealer called a squeal. They offered to change the torque converter for $2100. Since they had already destroyed and replaced the engine I declined.
After driving it for a day I determined the squeal occured at the shift points when the engine rpm exceeded 3000. It shifted fine, but is sounded bad.
I visited 2 shops in th Pittsburgh for diagnosis. Both said the pump was going bad. I called zf, and their distributer ( Erikson Industries ) and got the same diagonosis based soley on my description.
Gillece's facility was clean and convienient for me. They have done several zf transmissions so they appreciate the sophistication. They also build their own torque converters for the zf. They told me to come back in 2 weeks so they could recheck the fluid level. They also recommend changing the fluid at 25k - 30 k miles. The warranty is 12 months 12k miles parts and labor, nationwide.
Hope this helps.
My transmission just died without any warning!
