I decided to scrap my Navigation system and screens for my own MMI system.
Estimated cost is approx $1100
1. carplayer.com's software that will interface into a 12v powered micro pc. P3 800 mhz with 30 gig hdd. I was able to configure it so when the car turns off it will go into suspend mode drawing less than .09 amps and after 24 hours of inactivity hibernate then off mode.
2. 7 inch touch screen vga monitor (flat pannel)
I will be able to integrate GPS , MP3 , and Movie files, as well as ON BOARD VAG COM and Win XP! I will use VAG scope to have contant monitoring of tranny temps and other important information.
Also i will use a wireless internet connection to update logs and files to my computer at home.
I just ordered the computer and the software i just have to wait for the vga monitor to come in. approx 1 week left.
This was inspired by one of those insane guys in the Audio forum with the A4. I tried this about 3 years ago but the pc was too big and it was hard to get a stable power supply.. i guess demand has increased and technology came though.
