Maybe it has to do with the size. I asked them for the best A/S 19" tire and they said the Pilot Sport A/S.

Default what the hell do tyre rack know??

what tyres work best is specific to the chassis, the transmission (fwd, rwd, awd), and the driving style. just because a particular tyre works well on a m3 doesn't mean that it will work as well on a quattro.

Default they sell tyres :-)

therefore i'm extremely sckeptical on their motives for preferring one tyre over another, and suspect they often pump tyres purely because they get better margins on some rather than others.

they also perpuate the bs that the lower the aspect ratio, and the wider the tyre, the more rubber (contact patch) you have on the road. that is absolutely wrong.

i prefer to obtain the car magazine tyre tests because:

1) you have access to all the data they obtain
2) you understand the trade-offs they found with each tyre (dry grip, wet grip, slalom grip, braking wet/dry etc).
3) you can make your own mind up.

having said that, i have yet to see a tyre test with an awd car...

I'm going through the same analysis for my 2001 A8L - replace the Dunlop SP Sport 8000's, 245/45ZR18, with either the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S or with the ContiExtremeContact. As far as I can tell from all I've read and heard, you can't go wrong with either one. The Michelin is a bit easier to get, but costs more. The Conti gets the nod from Tire Rack. Except on a dry track at speed, either will beat the Dunlops, plus the Dunlops should not be allowed out of the garage on snow, even on a quattro.
Don't know which way I'll go yet.
My wife has ContiSportContacts on her MB E430 and it has been a good tire, except on snow.

Default I couldn't find a head-to-head-comparison on TireRack, but ...

there are the Owner's Surveys. You have to take them with a grain of salt, especially when a tire has low reported mileage, but in general I've found the results to be reasonable. In this Survey, the Michelin A/S seems to have better dry handling; the ContiExtremeContact, better snow traction.

BTW: TireRack moderates the Audiworld wheel/tire forum. They won't say anything at all about a tire rather than say something bad, but that's really not an unreasonable position.
