Unsure what to do...
I've had my 745Li for just over a year, and am totally done with it. It's been a true lemon, and BMW is buying it back. My quandary is whether to get the A8L, which I love, or an LS430 (cringe). In my heart, I want the A8L, but I can't go through another year of problems, and frankly, after monitoring this board for a while, I have seen several problems listed with the car. What's a guy to do?

The "guy" is to get an A8L!! I have yet to see any serious issues with post-launch vehicles. I have had mine since early Sept. and it is perfect! LS430? Maybe for someone else but NOT you!!!

I'm ending my tawdry relationship w/ my 2nd 745...
... and will be taking delivery of a 2004 A8L early next week. I've been through the same process that you describe and yes, even found myself at the Lexus dealership enjoying their cappuccino & test-driving the LS430. (Sadly, I enjoyed the cappuccino more than the car.)
My hesitation with the A8L was jumping into another "first year" car and repeating history all over again. I've been reading this board on & off for a bit too and had some of the same concerns that you mention. But, the problems that have been noted here DO seem relatively minor. In fact, many people comment about simply "waiting until the 5,000 mile service" to mention it to the dealership. If your 745 has been anything like mine (especially the first one), you weren't given that luxury.
Is BMW still going to buy your car back if you don't take another BMW as a replacement? Typically "trade assists" involve swapping into a new BMW. Or, are you pursuing this as a lemon law case?

Can't say much about either of those cars as I was never interested in them...
But what I can say after having owned my '04 for seven weeks is that I have close to 3300 thrilling miles.
I don't have not had any issues so far that have required that I bring the car in for service.
This car is magnificent! I simply can't stop driving it!

Most of my cars have been black and I would drive the non-black cars in bad weather because I am a fanatic about keeping a car clean. Even though this one is silver, the disease has apparently spread!! It hasnt seen rain yet! After consulting with no less than three dozen car psycholgists, they all came up with the same answer. The trouble is that I cant remember what they said so I still suffer!!! LOL
