Default I think its rather sad that people

who have a Lexus, or what ever, and compare them to a German car such as the new A8L. It is comparing a apple to an orange. Sure the Lexus has reliability but it does not have charisma like the A8L. It does not have a character, which seems to differ from L to L. And this is also a first year model production; These thing are going to happen as long as there are cars, and first years. Thing is that the Japanese use what they know works. Example is the G35 turned SUV, a'la Murano. They knew the chasis worked and had no problems so they put it in both the Murano and FX. They also use electronics that they know work and have been tested for a long time. Where as the Germans are more put a rough-draft out and work the problems out. I've yet to hear a story where the fix is not simple. Sure there are people out there where they have waited awhile for their car to be fixed, its not becuase the fix is hard, but that this is such a new car that there are hardly any spare parts out yet to fill the que. Sorry for this rant but please understand that this is a first year model, and please don't bash it becuase a few people have had a few minor software glitches.

What a weird attitude.

1. What's so "sad" about trying to compare the relative virtues of German vs. Japanese products in any field? Or is chosing an automobile like chosing a sports team: a matter of geographic loyalty that trumps all?

2. Do they have EPA ratings for "charisma" yet? I (and I suspect many) car owners want a car that WORKS FOR A LIVING.

3. "Thing is that the Japanese use what they know works." (That says it all, really.) Well for my $75,000 I would certainly want the builder to use what he KNOWS to work. Does anyone really prefer to find out the hard way?

4. "Where as the Germans are more put a rough-draft out and work the problems out." (More to the point...maybe they should label these cars as "prototypes" and give them the people to road test. Anyway, no one at Audi or at my selling dealer ever suggested to me that I was signing up as a test pilot when I bought my A8L.)

5. "...a few minor software glitches" (didn't I read here yesterday abouit some poor soul with a three-month old A8L needing a new ENGINE?).

Default Opinion re: Lexus vs. Audi

After owning 4 different Lexi (Plural of Lexus, I beleive) I can sum up the difference easily. The Lexus is an automobile that is extremely refined to the point where the engineers have removed the "soul" and deadened the input from the exterior around you to the point where the car "just drives". Granted my Audi has 170k on the odometer but one the less it has character-you hear the exhaust when you slam the "pedal to thed metal". Lexus just took you from point A-B quickly. The input from the steering wheel is exact and so you are able to feel the road. Lexus just nullifies the input and does the job of "steering".

In all, after 10 years behind the wheel of a Lexus I must say that I'm extremely pleased being back behind the wheeel of a car that has a personality and fine german engineering.

PS-New model years almost always have some glitches IMHO.

Enjoy the ride....

Default It was a coolant problem

The dealer may be lying to cover their ***. I wouldn't believe a whole new engine needed brand new. The dealer could've made a big mistake and not replace the coolant cap. That stuff happens after the build, not during. Heh this one makes me laugh "car owners want a car that WORKS FOR A LIVING," do you think all these people here thought that a first-year German model would be problem free? All these people knew that there were would be problems, but they like the car above all, so much that they are willing to go through some of these minor problems. And yes, your car was NOT a lemon from the description you gave. It was all a software update, just plug in the VAG-COM and 20 or so minutes later the update is complete. No one needs to tell you that a German car will have problems, everyone knows the reliability of Germans, unless you lived under a rock all your life. To sum it all up, this is a German car, what do you expect?

If they could have (or would have) solved all the unreliable and weird "issues" with my car for 20 minutes worth oftech time how come they:

a. kept it in the shop for about 1/2 of the entire time I owned it?

b. never got it working right?

c. Coughed up a big fat check for refund and kept the car?
