I did a fair amount of research before I purchased mine. You want to avoid RRG (Risk Retention Group) as the Obligor on the contract. They tout that the are backed by A+ rated insurance companies, but that doesn't really help you because they are not a party to the service contract. Typically, the "insurance" as I understand it benefits the RRG in the event of losses/claims in excess of reserves, but not the contract holder. Also, you have to read the contract. Is it a named coverage type contract? In which case only, for example, the power train is covered. Or is an "exclusion" type contract in which everything but the specific items excluded (listed) are not covered. You should be able to request a copy of the contract prior to purchasing. You also need to see if "breakdown" includes or excludes "wear and tear". Some will cover items that have worn beyond manufacturer's tolerances, others won't. The part has to "break". There are other little outs like won't cover claims due to abuse (never defined) or from sludge - I suspect every car has some sludge at some point in time. Is a dealer selling you this or is it direct over the internet?

Default Thanks for the info.. read inside Re: Third party warranty time. Any suggestions?

I have just started looking around for this. I was directed by Champion Audi to Allstate as a good warranty package. The web based ones seem shadey at best... ie Warranty Gold etc.. I figure all state is a big name. The car is slightly modified, exhaust etc.. but I have a good relationship with the dealer and I don't think they would do anything to hurt me mostly because they don't have to cover my parts anymore...

Which one did you go with?¿

I went with a warranty that was offered through AAA in NY. They have a Member Care services department which enters into these arrangements for a discount to the members and I'm sur AAA gets something out of it. The Obligor under the contract is not an RRG and the Registration page provides that you can make a claim directly against the insurer, Great American, which is registered with the NYS Insurance Department and subject to regulation by them (RRGs are not). The administrator is Warranttech and a few dealers I spoke with had good experiences with them. It's not ideal, but they did have the most robust coverage - it's an exclusionary type coverage, wear and tear is covered and even struts, which pretty much no other contract covered. It also sounds like its competitive on price. AllState is a big name, but I'll bet they are not the Obligor on the contract, but rather they re-insure the obligor who I'm going to guess is a RRG. At the end of the day it came down to, for me anyway, I don't think AAA would want to take a PR hit if the program went bust. Your also correct about WarrantyGold (their former adminstrator is bankrupt and holding all their reserves and I can't tell you that all of the former contract holders won't be dragging them into court) Warranty Warehouse, etc. They all pretty much use the RRG model. Let me know how you decide - and read the contract - you should have at least 30-60 to rescind and get you money back.
