Default 1998 Audi A8 Airbag system diagnosis.

How do I go about diagnosing an Airbag system? The lamp remains lit throughout the time the car is started and driven. Car is new to me so I am trying to diagnose this problem..

Default You need the ross-tech tool or VAG-COM

There is a stored fault code, using the OBD-II software (available from <a href="http://www.ross-tech.com">ross-tech.com</a>) you can troubleshoot it.

My business partner's 98 A8 has had the air bag warning light come on twice, here was his fault codes:

2 DTC's Found:
00532 - Voltage Supply B+
07-10 - Signal to Low - Intermittent
00656 - Airbag Seat Occupant Sensor (G128)
32-10 - Resistance too High - Intermittent

10/16/03
VAG-COM Version: Release 303.1

Control Module Part Number: 4D0 959 655 H
Component and/or Version: Airbag 7 Audi 050C
Software Coding: 00225
Work Shop Code: WSC 02324
1 Faults Found:
00656 - Seat Occupied Sensor: Passenger Side (G128)
32-10 - Resistance too High - Intermittent

I just cleared them and it went away both times, the first time for 8 months or so, and I just cleared it the second time a couple weeks ago. The cancelling ring in the steering wheel can have weird electrical connections sometimes, or that's what I think it is.

Default I am having an airbag light that's being caused

by something in the back seat. Vag says left seat sensor. I'll get in there soon. b

Default It's the sensor I believe

Jeff Berstein has posted the fix to this, the sensor comes unglued from the bottom of the back seat as I believe.

Default Re: Back seat occupancy sensor

I had the same problem with both sides of my back seat setting off this code. I ended up having the left side replaced under warranty and I did the right side myself.

The dealer told me the occupancy sensor had gone bad so it needed to be replaced. I bought the part and installed it myself. The job isn't that hard to do. Just remove the seat and disassemble the leather covering.

Observing the sensor pad as I removed it I noticed that it wasn't glued to the seat foam anymore. I believe the glue dried out and caused the pad to not be attached to the foam.

Jeff Bernstein
In looking back I believe that the adhesive that holds the sensor pad to the seat may go bad and this may be what causes the intermittent fault. Knowing this I would check to make sure that the sensor is still glued to the foam before I bought a new sensor for about $100.
