Default What do you think a MAP sensor is?

I got an email from a guy in the UK regarding the ZF 5HP19 transmission:

We have discovered if the engines MAP sensor is faulty this will cause the K3 clutch to burn out !!
If the transmission is rebuilt the same fault will re occur within 30 miles of the rebuild if the MAP sensor is not replaced. Audi GB price is £48.
Have you heard of this before, Im not sure if this is just relevent to A8's only.

What the heck is a MAP sensor? He never got back to me.....

I beleive that it is a "manifold absolute pressure" sensor.

Default That would be for a turbo car....not a normally aspirated car?

I don't think the A8 has that does it?

I don't know, but they are widely used on non-turbo cars.

Default Manifold Absolute Pressure

definition: Refers to a manifold absolute pressure sensor, a variable resistor used to monitor the difference in pressure between the intake manifold at outside atmosphere. This information is used by the engine computer to monitor engine load (vacuum drops when the engine is under load or at wide open throttle). When the engine is under load, the computer may alter spark timing and the fuel mixture to improve performance and emissions.

http://autorepair.about.com/library/glossary/bldef-495.htm</a

An intake manifold sensor, on the engine side of the throttle plate, measures manifold pressure (which is less than atmospheric if the engine is running) using a thin tiny SS sheet that changes electrical properties when sucked back and forth. Can't imagine impact on a selected tranny part.

Default correct

the v8 measures air mass, while a turbo generally measures air pressure (using a map sensor)

Default Interesting ... makes me want to check the Bentley's.

To your direct questions, I don't have an idea what the implication would be for our 4.2's and the 5HP24.

However, if I were to reach and try to justify what the UK guy is saying, it would be something like -

If I look at the overall ECU-TCU integrated system, it makes sense that the TCU would need to have a "signal" derived on changing manifold pressure. This would be in addition to a "signal" that resulted from the reaction of throttle position and injector load. Hmm ... scenario, driver holds throttle position the same but RPM drops while going up a grade ... but then, I would think the ME 7 "torque demand/sensing" algorithm would cover that ... maybe there is the answer, maybe not ... I'm looping.

A somewhat related topic is that "I find the variable intake manifold system to be more of a nuisance than a benefit".

On the other hand, the UK guy may just be referencing issues with the turbo cars (??).

Default MAP is an old standard, MAF is newest method.

Years ago, when cars were first barely computerized, MAP sensors were used .. nowadays, it's MAF (flow not pressure) which's the gold standard for intake manifold sensing.
