First road trip in the A8...
Having just picked up my "new" 98 4.2 last week I decided to take it up to Mammoth from San Diego for the weekend (800 mile round trip). First of all, what a great cruising/highway car! I sold Audis for a couple years and never had an opportunity to put more than 100 miles on an A8 at one time. I am very impressed with the balanced way the car handles. It's obviously much more comfortable than my 04' S4 Avant and makes driving so effortless. Another amazing thing was the gas mileage: I averaged 25 on the way up and 29 on the way back (8000 to 0 elevation). I used the cruise at 70-75 quite a bit. The S4 has only seen 20mpg once or twice no matter how easily I drive. Not to mention the convenience of the 23.7 gal tank. Although my car has some of the common A8 issues (headrests, heated wheel, etc), I can't believe I paid $11K for a car this nice! It HAS to be the best used car value on the market! That is, if it doesn't put me in the poorhouse when it comes to repairs/maintenance. My tranny fluid change will be coming within a few weeks as the car has 86K. I probably won't be driving the car too much before then..
