I live in a colder climate, the previous owner used 10-30 Dino oil, never put in synth. I just changed mine (whats up with the $22 oil filters???) and replaced it with the same. Seems to due just fine. Does anyone run synth in their A8? Blend? Anything other than 10-30 (in the winter???) Thanks.

Default Probably 95+% of us run synthetic oils.

I'd guess that the most common oil is Mobil 1 0w-40 all year and all climates. I've always changed oil and filter at 5k mile intervals.

- Used Mobil 1 10w-30 for the first 10k miles (before Mobil 1 0w-40 was available)

- Used Mobil 1 0w-40 from 10k to 50k.

- Just switched to Mobil 1 0w-30 Racing (a long story, look down 4 threads)

Oil consumption to date has been unmeasurable.

My car came with 5W-30 in it from the dealer (used) I plan to change it to Mobil 1 0W-40 on the next change.

BTW... you can get oil filters for ~$14+ at AutohausAZ. Less if you buy 10 or more.

Default Randy, you should write some kind of FAQ for oil choices in the A8/S8

You basically do over and over....but maybe a simple oil chart for viscosity and brands that are preferred, say synthetics?

I would put a page up so we don't go through this every time it gets cold out! ;-)

Default Oil do you use in your A8?

After a bunch of research I have settled in with the Dino (non synthetic) crowd. The key to an oils performance is the additive package NOT the base stock. A well-formulated Dino oil will perform just as well as synthetic oil in nearly every application that most drivers face.

The combination of anti-wear agents, detergents and anti corrosion additive package are the most critical elements to consider next to of course, the proper viscosity index for where you drive.

"I use synthetic because if it's good enough for racing engines it's good enough for me"
HD racing oil works great in racing engines, but is the wrong viscosity and simply overkill for your daily driver. Clever marketing by the oil companies is at work here.

Change your oil every 3,000 - 5,000 depending on how you drive, select the proper viscosity index for your region and season, buy a quality oil that has the API starburst symbol, and if you feel like "splurging" on your car - by the very best oil FILTER you can get.

Just my 2 cents

Default Basically agree, but ...

Back when I had a car with an oil pressure guage, I'd notice the oil pressure starting to drop at ~2500 mile with a premium dino oil, and that became my oil/filter change interval. This frequent interval would just be a pain-in-the-neck with the S8.

Normaly I'd be changing a good synthetic oil at a 10k mile interval. I reduced this to 5k miles with the S8 only because I frequently track the car. To date, I have about 2500 on-track miles on the S8, which means probably 2200 miles of full throttle operation ... and not a hint of any motor problems.

BTW: For Mobil's Delvac 1 15w-40, their synthetic for 18-wheeler diesels, Mobil recommends a 100k mile oil change interval and an engine rebuild at one million miles.
