ok this might been discussed at lenght, but what Oil do you use in your A8?
- Used Mobil 1 10w-30 for the first 10k miles (before Mobil 1 0w-40 was available)
- Used Mobil 1 0w-40 from 10k to 50k.
- Just switched to Mobil 1 0w-30 Racing (a long story, look down 4 threads)
Oil consumption to date has been unmeasurable.
BTW... you can get oil filters for ~$14+ at AutohausAZ. Less if you buy 10 or more.
I would put a page up so we don't go through this every time it gets cold out! ;-)
The combination of anti-wear agents, detergents and anti corrosion additive package are the most critical elements to consider next to of course, the proper viscosity index for where you drive.
"I use synthetic because if it's good enough for racing engines it's good enough for me"
HD racing oil works great in racing engines, but is the wrong viscosity and simply overkill for your daily driver. Clever marketing by the oil companies is at work here.
Change your oil every 3,000 - 5,000 depending on how you drive, select the proper viscosity index for your region and season, buy a quality oil that has the API starburst symbol, and if you feel like "splurging" on your car - by the very best oil FILTER you can get.
Just my 2 cents

Normaly I'd be changing a good synthetic oil at a 10k mile interval. I reduced this to 5k miles with the S8 only because I frequently track the car. To date, I have about 2500 on-track miles on the S8, which means probably 2200 miles of full throttle operation ... and not a hint of any motor problems.
BTW: For Mobil's Delvac 1 15w-40, their synthetic for 18-wheeler diesels, Mobil recommends a 100k mile oil change interval and an engine rebuild at one million miles.
