Tranny rear flange shaft replacement?

Paul, and anyone else who's done it - Spoke to a mech very nearby that works on germans. Very knowledgeable. He said that on Benz, he also replaces the output flange shaft (Audi PN:01V 409 809, $534.00 from Audi) because the groove in the shaft will wear out the new seal sooner.

Question: Did your flange output shaft have a groove in it from the previous seal?

The one in the pic from AudiPages looks like it, but did it? --

No grove that I remembered, cleaned up the fit and everything was fine and dandy!

I just did this too and didn't have a groove. Is he saying that the seal creates the groove ?

$534 for that part? Hell, might as well just get a rebuilt tranny for an extra $1500 or so!!!

Unless he can show you some obvious groove/s...

.. IMHO, just have a new OEM seal installed and get two nice cases of wine with $$ saved.
Note the emphasis to use an Audi OEM seal.

In theory the mechanic's correct, but ...

My output shaft seal was leaking almost since day one, but didn't get replaced until 30k miles. Today at 53k, it's still fine. At 49.5k, I had the car up on a rack looking for any leaks before the warranty ran out.

I agree with airbil, don't replace the shaft unless it's damaged. Spending the savings on two cases of wine isn't a bad idea either :-)
