$480 for a new CV joint -- is that too much? Just quoted that from local, ind. shop

I think I paid $135 labor to have mine recently installed....the axle is about $175 from raxles....with new CV joint.

I don't have the time/facilities to wrench on it. The $480 price is all-inclusive, parts and labor.
Figure $300-$320 for parts and the rest labor at $75/hr, it comes out right. Seemed high to me, though. I don't have time or facilities (warm garage) to do this one myself.

Sounds high to me too....... A rebuilt halfshaft cost me $80 and it should take no more than....
1 hour of labor to install the new one. You then must realign the front end. Total cost:
$80
$90
$70
Total= $240

One reason I went with Raxles is that the joint is new, not rebuilt.
To rebuild the CV joint, they end up oversizing the joints by regrinding and putting in oversized bearings.
Because I will continue to track my car, I thought it would be best to get a new one.
You can get the axle, bring it to Sears or any other place, they can change it for probably something like $70 as skiracer suggests.
