Default Tranny service needed at 60k?

I have 60k mi on my S8, and my service/dealer is suggesting I replace the fluid and filter on my tranny. He also said it is expensive synthetic fluid (must be REALLY expensive coming from an Audi dealer).
I plan on a TB change at 90k, but should I do a tranny service now? Thanks, guys.

Default Good advice on the ATF fluid/filter change

But you need to tell him it's not synthetic oil that goes into the tranny.

I wouldn't pay more than about $15/quart/liter from the stealer, otherwise I'd bring my own in.

Default Highly recomended!

As you probably already noticed on this forum, on-time tranny service is THE MOST important thing you can do for your A8/S8. You can even do it yourself, just go to the audipages.com for procedure. I would use VW/Audi ATF ONLY (it is mineral fluid, and not synthetic as dealers say), pricy, but worth it.

Default Not a good idea...

I really don't recommend changing the fluid to anything other than the official Audi fluid. The reason, the TC requires the fluid be formulated to handle the heat and friction of the programmed slippage we have in these vehicles. It might seem good for awhile, but IMHO the clutch in the TC will erode much more quickly with anything other than the proper fluid ultimately resulting in the famous lock/unlock and or hunting issue showing itself sooner that it should (if you don't have it now).

Default Let me tell you a secret.

When you rebuilt your tranny you had the TC rebuilt too. That means you have regular American clutch material in your TC.

Default That makes a difference w/ synthetic vs. dino fluid?

Not quite sure I follow, TozoA8. Are you referring to TwinCities rebuild? I believe mine is still stock, and based on previous threads I will probably stay with the Audi fluid, not M1. My dealer is quoting $400-500 for the service, but it seems like a critical maintenance item. Agree?

Default What I am trying to say is rebuilt TC has a different clutch material versus OEM.

If any American car can use synthetic fluid with that TC clutch material, why this shouldn't? We all know how much the dealer know about Audi transmissions." Hmmmm.... Sir, you need a new transmission, $10K ". Why would I believe anything they tell me?

Default Not "any American car" -- Mobil 1 is "Not recommended for Chrysler Type 7176 ATF"

See for yourself at http://www.mobil.com/USA-English/Lubes/PDS/GLXXENPVLMOMobil_1_Synthetic_ATF.asp.

tozoA8 and I have had this discussion before. Especially with original or ZF rebuilt torque converters, the long term compatibility of other fluids is unknown. And fluids which suppress hunting might do so at the cost of greater torque converter clutch slip.
