water in transmission possible?

i had to drive through a road today that had a few inches of water. actually, had to drive through it twice, since our house is in a dead end street. on our way to nyc tonight (about 140 miles), i hear a weird noise that sounds almost like a deisel engine (trrrrr) from the area just below the arm rest, under the car. i'm guessing the transmission. it goes away when sitting still, or when on the gas. any other time, especially when de-accelerating, it's the trrrrr noise again. is it possible the water had somehting to do with it? car made it to new york no problem, and drove as perfect as usual, save for the noise when letting off the throttle.

also, when parking in nyc, also noticed a heinous, grinding noise when in reverse. only when on the gas. almost as if there's no trans fluid in there.

i'm at 60k miles, and had the trans oil/filter change done maybe 10k miles ago.

any ideas? i can't think of anything other than the water incident that coudl have caused this. thanks much

Bill, I was underneath my car last night looking at the tranny. How deep was the water ? I only see two possible entry points but the water would have to be 10" deep (assuming no splash).

The flywheel is visible but that shouldn't allow water into the trans. There's also another hole about dead center about 3/4" in diameter. Not sure what this is if anything...

Tozo, other trans guys... any throughts ?
