Default rear breather hose replacement

just finished. I pulled the intake manifold, and I don't see how you could do it any other way -- short of tozo's solution. Of course, you have to remove the fuel rails and injectors and stuff first, but it's not too bad. The intake manifold gaskets are about $20 each online.

The rear hoses were completely shot. There are the two large hoses, and then there is a third piece of 4mm hose that runs up to the intake manifold. It pushes on to a barbed fitting on the engine block -- when I tried to pull it off the barb, the hose *snapped*.

The large hoses were the consistency of chewing gum. The small hose was like a dried twig. I replaced it with a length of 3/16" fuel hose - no telling if that will be more durable or not.

The intake manifold was not super hard to remove, but you might want a friend to help you put it back. It's heavy and unwieldy and hard to get back in place without dropping it and gouging the machined surfaces.

I'm a bit disgusted with (a) the poor quality of the rubber and (b) the fact that so much of the engine must be disassembled to reach them, when it could easily have been designed so the hose clamps are not entirely obscured by the intake manifold.

The heater hoses seemed in good shape.

There is another bit of vacuum hose back there that was gummy. I will replace it before winter.

Default I don't know if it helps, but ...

I've been running without those plastic engine covers for about the last 18 months. I assuming that all they do is trap heat and help cook the hoses. After five years, all the hoses still seem to be in good shape ... knock on wood.

Default probably good for the front hose

but I'm not sure how much better off the rear hoses are. I think they rot from the inside out. I'd try a different material as an experiment, except it will take at least five more years to learn the results.

Default Question

What's with the staggered coil packs on the 40v engines. The 32v coil pack are in a straight line. Does that provide more room for the extra valve?

And I'm with you on taking off the engine covers. Saves me 5 minutes every time I need to check on something leaking. Maybe I'll put them back on for the winter.

Default I think it's an optical illusion.

They're inline, but the first coil pack has been turned upside-down so that the electrical connector doesn't interfere with the relocated breather hose. Don't ask me why the breather hose was relocated :-)

Are these only an issue with the 32v motors ? any symptoms when they do go - rough idle ?

Default Re: rear breather hose replacement

i replaced one of the rear breather hoses 2weeks ago.. yes it was like chewing gum, and completely fell apart while removing it, the other one seemed to have been replaced, since it had different clamps on it.

i went to advance auto parts and got the replacement for about $8-$9bucks, compared to the the bull$hit $65 the stealer wanted.. the hose was such a tight fit, i didn't even put the clamps back on (which would have been nearly impossible to reach, since i did NOT takeoff the manifold, but i did get scrapped knuckles from it...

in the long run i saved about $250bucks!!!

Default I assumed Audi put those engine covers on for a reason, other than good looks.

While it makes sense that removal will shed excess heat, there may be an engineering reason. Kinda like the issue of removing the under belly tray - it was designed to regulate airflow to critical components. I'd also be interested to know if humidity plays a role, as it sure is drier here in CO than the East or mid West.
