sticky lifter? Valve problems? Need some help please
Also, when I start the car up I notice a bit of blue smoke lingering. It's also burning about a 1/8 quart of oil between changes. Not enought to get me real worried, but I'm starting to wonder if I've got a leaky valve, thus the blue smoke problem.
Any ideas, suggestions? Thanks in advance.
Lifter noise at startup is commom with the 4.2 and my mech at the Dealer who seems very good says it is normal. (You may have something worse, mine is just "ticking"). Exhaust smoke at startup is also pretty common because the first few seconds the fuel mixture is very rich. If it goes away quickly, I would not worry about it.
I have a 2001 with 50,000 and experience both of these.
Thanks for the info on the blue smoke. That makes sense. My father is the one that got me worried on that one, he was raised by auto mechanics, and went into mec engineering, he's the smart guy who suggested I might have a bad problem. But the smoke problem isn't that bad, I think your right about the fuel mixture.
Does it sound like rocks in a tumbler and metallic? If so, it's the tranny hydraulic pump.
I hope it's not your tranny, good luck!

Blue smoke that quickly goes away, especially when combined with overall low oil consumption, is an indication of worn valve stem seals. When you shut off the car, oil in the valve train area can leak by the valve stem seals and puddle in the cylinder. When you start the car, you get a puff of blue smoke, and that's it. This is a common annoyance with many older or high milesage cars, the rubber of the valve stem seal just gets old and hard; but it's not a serious problem at all.
