"Upper" Oil Pan Gasket Replacement?
Has anyone here replaced the "upper oil" pan gasket that sits about 2" above the traditional oil pan gasket. This is the gasket located between the bottom of the engine block and the piece that the oil pan bolts to. My mechanic says that this is an 8 hour job. Any ideas?

Yeah, I'm stumped by that too. I think what you're describing is inside the oil pan.
If that's true, how would you know it was leaking? Can you desribe the symptoms a little more?

Yes-- there is an upper and a lower pan gasket. I have replaced the lower several times to no avail-- and it might be leaking from the upper pan gasket-- I do not know how long it takes to replace it, but that is easy to confirm by calling a few shops or checking the Audi parts book that shows labor time for replacement.
If I were going to pay for 10 hours labor, I'd do a hell of a lot more down there than just this gasket. I would wait for the next Timing Belt interval and do it then-- oil is cheap.
