trouble with the "REST" feature

Default trouble with the "REST" feature

My heater will run on the rest feature only two or three minutes if left to run its course. Sometimes if I set it , the system turns off when I open the drivers door. It then refuses to reset and makes noises like some thing is going on in the dash. Anyone else have this happen to them?

Don't know what the sound is, but most likely the pump.

Default 90% of all A8s lose the Rest feature. The Pump always runs, and it's LOUD and obnoxious.

The power plug for the pump is right next to the brake fluid reservoir.

If you disconnect it, the pump will never run again, and the noise will go away.

It has a purple color code piece.

Default It has a low voltage shutoff, so battery charge? Connections? Post-shutoff noises aren't the pump

but probably the flaps moving to their parking position.

I'm pretty sure it has a low voltage shutoff because pulling up on the switch for an already-closed window will sometimes shut mine off.

If that's why yours is shutting off early, it could be because of low battery charge, a tired battery, or a less than perfect power or ground connection on the way to the HVAC controller.

Default 100% of them eventually lose it. Dust to dust etc. But 90% already?

I just don't hear independent Audi mechanics talking about that pump failing so often. What seems to be a good mileage for preemptively changing it?

Default Gee, mine works great. I guess that make my car rare and desirable, eh?

Now if only that damned heated steering wheel worked, it would be worth a FORTUNE!

The pump doesn't fail; it's control mechanism does.

The pump runs when the car is running, and it makes a very annoying gear-motor whine/grindy sound.

Once again, the pump runs when it's not supposed to, it does not fail.

Default The pump is meant to run with the car on if there's any heating demand

So says a footnote in the service manual. I'd have thought it would shut down at higher revs or during low demand for heating when it seems to be superfluous, but no...
