Default A8 won't start after rebuild.

Hi. Any ideas. Just repaired 40v engine, cylinder head gaskets, timing belt and rocker gaskets etc plus (original problem) replaced transmission after it had no reverse.

Everything back on except front bumper. When I try to start it nothing..

I'm just away to check for power at starter solenoid but of course this is nearly an hours job!

Any ideas. Does something need reset?

Couple points:

Gearbox indicator on dash is showing correct gears and goes into P N etc.

Both cylinder head gaskets replaced. So nearly all sensors disconnected now reconnected.

When turning key to start it doesn't appear lights are dimming at all and no clicks or anything what so ever.

Thanks in advance for help.

Colin.

Default Don't worry about sensors. None can keep it from cranking. Look at starter connections and F125 ...

switch on the transmission, since those have been touched.

Also, does the red battery symbol light up when you turn on the key? If not, the two wire plug carrying small wires to the alternator and starter is probably unplugged.

Default Away to check connections..

Thanks for quick answer. Yes the alternator light is on and it goes off when key is moved to start postition then comes back on when key springs back.

EPC light is on all the time but as I remember it stays on until the engine is started.. am I correct?

Away to check wiring connections now as you suggest.

thanks

Default The starter motor has two small spade terminals

When when replaced my transmission and I was in charge of putting the wire back on the starter motor....I put it on the spade connection I could see.

However, there are actually two spade connections, one is for the starter and one is for nothing.....

That is the one I put it on....in the end, one of us got it off the spade terminal and back onto the correct terminal by wiggling of the hands.....otherwise it would of been a long journey.

From this picture I can't see the other terminal or it's been too long to remember but you can see it goes on the engine side of the starter.

Default You were spot on. but gearbox now u/s..s_ _ t!.

Well done! You were exactly correct. I'd put solenoid connector onto wrong terminal!!! It's a shame the starter is so difficult to access. This check should have been 10minutes max! Unfortunately I had subframe and everthing else back on. I should have noticed as when tightening main sarter cable it was difficult to get it in correct position and still have room for solenoid wire..

I managed to slacken all bolts and remove one closest to the starter and pry subframe down then remove engin mount three allen screws, then take off engine mount itself then get to started...After two hours or so I got it and back together.

Now absolutely upset, as engine started in about two cranks after everything back on. Engine sounded perfect. But there sounded like a bit of cavitation from gearbox. I topped up oil as per book and cavitation got less but noise didn't totally stop.

Car still on ramp and Gearbox drives wheels forward but still no reverse..The same problem as when I removed box!!

Notes:
I'm sure torque convertor was on correctly. three clicks and measured back from flange 1/4-1/2 inch. Also when mating gearbox to engine I managed to push it flush prior to putting bolts in.

On topping up gearbox has taken 9 litres of oil.

Gearbox cost ?1033 to repair by so called expert. He said he checked everything and it was front clutch plates that were wiped..no mention of an F seal as I've read below.

Anyone any other ideas..before I remove box again...aargh..

If you don't have reverse and that was your problem initially, it's almost certain the F Clutch Seal

Default Where is F seal in gerbox?

Yes gearbox was first problem with car but when it was on ramp (and I was waiting on the gearbox to be returned) I decided to do headgaskets etc, timing belt inc water pump and tensioners etc.) The car was using about a litre of water every 1000miles or so no leaks and cyl 3 down on compression. All back ok it seems although timing belt seems a little slack to me (only between camshaft pulleys) but I've heard thats normal.

The so called gearbox expert (recommended by audi and others) said that he found a problem on the first clutch that he pulled apart, the next one was ok and he says
'I checked the seals'
I said the 'F clutch' seal.
He said 'yes.' I'm beginning to doubt he did this.

From photos on another thread a guy had an S8 transmission with bust F seal. But i noticed the rear section of the box to the diff was removed. Do you need this off to do F seal. Mine has not been to pieces here.

Sorry for disjointed writing I hope you guys get the drift. I've been at Audi 13hours today and am tired!! I was hoping to use it tomorrow but looks like I'll have to borrow the wives Scooby...again..

Cheers

Colin

Default F seal is the last thing at the back of the tranny

It's common to find the A clutch housing ripped....and sooner or later it causes problems, but only in forward gears, specifically 1st.....

The F seal is what holds everything stationary while the gear set is turned opposite to go into reverse.

If they didn't completely disassemble the transmission as in my post below and replace the F seal, they didn't solve your problem.

Heck, it only took three remove and reinstalls to get my tranny right!
