Trans filter and replace 5 liters of fluid $252
The magnets had fluff to wipe off, but no pieces.
The filter was a bit muddy looking.
Remarkably, on the return drive, the transmission felt "better", with no TCC hunting at all. On the drive there this morning, the hunt was on. Little wonders!
Either a second fluid dump, or a flush may be scheduled in a month or two.
At 100k miles, the filter seems a good idea, and the price wasn't bad to get a look inside.
If it were not so wintery the task could have been done out in the shop.

01L Transmission Capacities
Initial filling 9.8L
fluid change 3.5 to 4L
(3.7 to 4.2 quarts)
Note 1) up to 4 liters if the oil pan is disassembled)
Better a liter low than a liter too much!
I'll be on watch for any "low fluid" symptoms.
Thanks for the warning!

You have to check it again when it's at the correct temperature which is normally considerably lower than operating temperature.
I would go back to the indepedent within the next day or so and have this done. It should be 7 liters, five is low.
The temperature was monitored With VAG equipment during the refill. I had a comfortable chat with the tech when collecting the car. A good man, he knew what he was doing as well.
.
First warmer weather, the level will be checked again.
I have the need to be sure as well.
Or is there some fatalism in the dark hope the entire unit will blow to bits?
More difficult for me is the complete absence of hunting on the three short trips I have taken since reclaiming the vehicle. Somewhat in disbelief actually. I want to go out and drive around just to make sure some dream has not overcome me.
I think not.

Are you saying that the fill quantities listed in the service literature may be in error?
With 10 liters total fill, a replenishment after pan drop of 7 liters leaves only two liters in the converter. Or perhaps the service reference leaves out the TC volumn.
IF 70% of the fluid capacity is exchanged with a service fill, That is most pleasing. The 50%, of 50%, of 50%, scheme never has seemed a satisfactory solution.
Now Must I really crawl under there to inspect and check the workmanship of another. For piece of mind, I suppose so.
