Default HELP ! Doing timing belt - can't find crank-locking hole...

Hello Everyone. Well I'm in elbow-deep doing the timing belt on my 01 A8L. I have the engine at TDC but am unable to locate the crank locking pin hole. I have looked everywhere around the driver's side motor mount. There is a hole just forward of the mount, but it does not appear to have a plug or go through the block to the crank. It is about 5/8 inch diameter and about 3/4 inch deep. Do I need to remove the driver's side motor mount to see the crank locking hole?

I searched and found the pic from A8CT. I will run back into the Garage and see if I can find this hole...back in a second....

Default A8CT's picture is good. This is a slow part of the job

If you have a way to see the plug as you're removing it, that might be better than how I did it -- blindly, by feel, from above.

Default The rotation happens after changing the belt, and the mount is somewhere else entirely

per the manual.

Default I FOUND IT GUYS - BUT NOW A NEW PROBLEM...!?!?

I did find the crank locking location, it is to the rear of the driver's side motor mount, in a very very difficult location. I had to remove the left front tire, and the level-sensing lever/linkage and then could just barely get to it with difficulty and cursing. The crank is now locked in place, and I have the cam sprockets off, as well as the old belt. So far so good.

PROBLEM: The tensioner appears to be a hydraulic cylinder. When I went to compress the tensioner using the bearing & bracket, I couldn't budge it. I'm thinking that the tensioner has already bled-down since the car has been sitting for 2 days in near zero temps. I did notice that upon very cold startup, for the last few weeks, I could hear a muffled rattle for about 1 or 2 seconds - then it quit. Could this have been the tensioner getting oil pressure and quieting things down? And if so....is this normal our should the cylinder hold pressure for a certain length of time without the engine running?

Thank You Everyone for coming to my rescue. This forum is terrific!

Default Belt tensioner is spring loaded but damped against retraction by its own oil. So keep pressure on it

If we're talking about the timing belt tensioner on a 4.2 5V, it has no connection to engine oil pressure. (Cold start rattles are probably lifters before the oil pressure comes up.) It extends freely but retracts only slowly. So put some pressure on it, and don't let go. It should retract slowly, very slowly. Pushing harder won't help much, just makes you tired sooner.

Disregard this if you're talking about some other tensioner.

You really took off the right front tire to get at the crank locking plug?
