Easy bluetooth upgrade for cars preped for phone... (long)
I have an 2003 S8 that comes with OnStar, and with the phone cradle for a Motorola V60 phone.
I purchased a BMW Bluetooth Upgrade Module (BTMU) that is shaped exactly like the CPT9000 (Motorola V60 series). I purchased it on Ebay for $210 including shipping from Morristown BMW. It is selling other places as well, but sometimes for substantially more. Based on what I have found out this is the EXACT same item that is sold for Audi and BMW (same partnumber and everything according to a source I saw on a BMW forum). The Audi and MB prices are about $100 higher. Only thing I saw that indicated it was BMW is that the BLuetooth ID you pair with shows up as "BMW BTUM". I assume this, as well as the security key which is printed on the back of the BTUM, is coded into a FLASH chip of some kind.
The BTUM has a small blue LED that also duplicates as a button allowing you to sync etc. You simply insert it into the phone cradle and you can now pair your phone with the car. I have a Sprint Treo 650 that is NOT listed as one of the compatible options. I am missing my Blackberry, but will test that when I get it back (long story).
When I dial from my phone, the car picks it up, and I can immediately talk using the car speakers/microphone. You hang up pressing the R/T button on the steering wheel. Incoming calls you pick up pressing the R/T key as well. No difference than any bluetooth headset.
The download of the phone numbers did NOT work for me. Since I have hundreds of contacts in my Treo, I am not sure it would be very useful anyway - would take to long to scroll. However, a very pleasent surprise (again thanks to GTI2GO) was the ability to use voice commands to store numbers, call name tags, and general dialing. This must be part of the OnStar functionality. Here is how to store name tags:
(Actions in "[]", you say in "", car response in <>
[Press R/T] <Ready> "Store" <Numbers Please> "8" <8> "4" <4> ... "Store" <Name Tag, Please> "Home" <repeat>...
To call
[Press R/T] <Ready>, "Call" <Name Tag> "Home" <Home> <Dialing>
To Dial
[Press R/T] <Ready> "Dial" <Number Please> "8" <8> ... etc,
It works really well - I still have to hear it get a digit wrong, though I have a little more trouble with my name tags. BTW, you can store nametags without having a phone, so you can try it out. If you dial it will try to hook you up to to OnStar, but just hit R/T. I would have been thrilled just with the basic handsfree option working like a regular headset, but these voice commands are really COOL!!!
Issues:
- The volume going through the speakers is a little low. It is reasonable loud enough, and it hasn't been a problem so far, but I would have liked to be able to turn it up another notch or two. It is defintely more quiet than the voice command responses. Maybe someone on the forum has an idea how you can turn the volume up???
- My phone doesn't like alternating with my headset and the car. Haven't figured that out yet. Both devices are listed on the phone.
There are apparently other (and cheaper options) to enable bluetooth. Assuming your car is phone preped, this upgrade doesn't get any easier, with NO wire cutting or splicing, and no special devices to mess up the look of your interior. A couple of posts have talked about a serial plug you can hook into in the back of the car, but apparently that is pre-03 (?). It is NOT clear to me that these other solutions allow you to use the OnStar voice commands, but I assume so.
Hopefully this is helpful to some of you.

If you use a regular phone, everything should be available via your car controls.
I have heard that if you use "object push" from the menu (can't remember if it was the PDA menu or the Parrot menu) then you could transfer contacts.
However, that's with the Parrot. YMMV.
Did you try turning your phone up when on a call to turn the speaker volume up?
Or see if there is a menu on your symphony radio, on my other half's B6 there is that function. But hers comes over the car speakers.
Anyone have a Motorola V60 cradle and cord from a 03 A8/S8?
I have tried everything on the volume. My radio allows me to use left, right or right + left speaker with the phone (access by pushing menu for a few seconds). This, however, is the only thing I seem to be able to control in regards to the phone.
I have turned up the phone while on, and tried all kinds of buttons and combinations. There may be an easy way to increase the line volume, but I can't find it :-(
PS: I'll try to send contacts from my treo - it might work

functionality seems to be similar to my B7 s4 (premium/no nav). my cingular 8125 loaded all my contacts (~300). scrolling isnt that bad on the b7 since it recognizes a fast scroll. on the b7 i can adjust speaker volume with steering wheel controls.
