Update on my hunting a4, I recoded the module to turn off DSP and no more hunting
The transmission finally shifts and drives like it should.
I've been reading up on the a8 forums as they have a lot of similar issues as to what i was experiencing on my 98.5 tip transmission.
They seem to have luck recoding the TCU module.
I was digging through the bentley and found nothing.
Luckily my brother sold me his factory manuals (from an Audi dealer)
I stumbled across the option to turn off dynamic shift programming.
the coding is 00010 vs the US 00000.
It shifts quicker, downshifts when it should. upshifts almost immediately when i back off on the accelerator.
I came to the conclusion that in euro mode the transmission behaves how i would of wanted it to.
I wish i knew about this a lonnnnnnnnnnng time ago.
If you have a tip transmission give it a try.
You must recode it with ignition on, engine off.

I know Tozo did this and it killed his tranny a week later. I've had it reprogrammed in mine for two years with still the hunting and thumping.
The Trans is likely reset at a recode, hence the suggestion to wait and see.
Now if we could just get the trans to reset to "sport", we would hav something!
