Default Voided TT Warantee?

Maybe some A4 people who've chipped/tuned their engines can answer this best:
What different mods will void our TT's warantee?
-more agressive computer chip?
-beefier exhaust?
-bigger turbo?
Just wondering... I *definitely* don't want to void my TT's warantee, judging from several of the posts lately...

Well, Im not to sure how Audi handles this, but with Honda, as long as you dont open the engine, the warranty isnt void. As a matter of fact, they cant tell you that the warranty is void if you add exaust / intake or similar bolt-on mods. However, the turbo and chip directly affect the internals of the engine, so i'd be careful about that.
Check out the SEMA website ( www.sema.org )

Default Ask Audi...better yet...ask yourself...more...

Imagine you spent a few hundred million dollars developing a car and bringing it to market, and imagine that you want to not only warantee the car for 3 years or 50K miles...but you want to pay for all the maintanence during the same period. Then imagine someone buys one of your cars and starts slapping in aftermarket chips to make it go faster...and you have no control over what that chip does...would you warantee the engine. Imagine that someone starts slamming the suspension...would your warrantee the wheel bearings? Imagine that they start messing with the wiring because they think they no more than you and all your engineers do...would you warrantee the electrical system? Ask any of these aftermarket "experts" if they'll give you the same warrantee and service policy Audi does? Seriously friend...can't you figure it out for youself? Sorry if I'm a little short but your question sounds like someone who never bought a car before.

Default Let's beat this horse some more...

I've got to agree with John. I know that others will disagree. In my view, the TT has wonderful handling characteristics is plenty quick. I know that one hell of a lot of time, thought, sweat, money and love went into the making of this car. I wouldn't even tinker with things if someone paid me to do it, yet alone spending hundreds or thousands for performance "upgrades".
If I decide that I need to go faster, then I will trade my 180hp in for a 225hp when it's available. That car is going to rip, and I suspect that we will be pleasantly surprised on the price. I've got a sneaking hunch that 180hp is going to be just fine for me, and I won't have to sweat bullets, scan law books for case law, or memorize the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act if I blow a turbo or something.

Default Thanks- JERK. Re: Ask Audi...better yet...ask yourself...more...

Thanks John, for that little tongue lashing. You really know how to make someone new to the forum feel comfortable asking a simple question. I'm so glad you are psychic and can tell I've never bought a car before. Sorry, my psychic (not) friend, but the TT will be the *fifth* sportscar I've owned since I've been of legal driving age (12 years ago). I've learned a lot about each car by asking as many questions as possible. I can't believe you are trying to discourage me from asking a perfectly resonable question that has been brought up in several other postings, but never asked by itself, as it's own topic. Besides, the only thing I was considering doing on my TT was possibly replacing the stock exhaust with a better version. I was just wondering outloud how people can change such important things as computer chips on their cars without voiding warantees... You are right- it doesn't make sense! That's why I was asking.
Geeez!
People with your social/condescending conversation skills were the reason I left the Porsche club.

Default Re: Voided TT Warantee?

If you modify your car, and that component causes a failure - it is not warrantied. Period! Chipping is considered tampering with the ecm, and is a no-no! Exhaust systems could change back-pressure, and cause problems with emissions, suspension modifications are a safety liability. If you are not worried about who pays for mods - do it! At the dealership level we can not do these things as it is a large liability we are not prepared to take on. I have done extensive mods on a brand new Toyota MR2 back in 88 and did not have any problems - but it is a flip of the coin(it helped that I was the Parts & Service director at the time!) I would have to say that unless you are made of gold, or just don't care - leave the car alone! It is an adequate performer as it sits! If you need more - Porsche,Ferrari,Viper, ect is there.

Default Hey John, what's up? (A different Sean)..........

Harsh comments. You've made perfectly clear your opinion on chipping in numerous past comments (and I tend to agree with you), but, geez, cut the guy some slack. Pretty soon, people are going to be too damn scared to ask questions.

Default Too harsh John

Alot of us know how you feel about modifications. If you don't want to do it...fine...don't. Others want to tinker with their cars...its their choice. You don't have to belittle a new forum visitor just for asking a question. I personally think chipping the car is ok...changing a turbo? probably not. This applies to any car. If I chip a car and the turbo blows...I will be getting a new turbo on my dime...not AoAs. As far as exhaust goes...I am all for that one.
We have to make the forums places for people to ask questions, and have knowledgeable thoughful answers put forth. How would you like it if you were visiting the forum for the first time...put in your first post...and then got a response such as yours?
All I am saying it that you can tone it down a bit and still get your point across.
Steve S.
97 A4 2.8Q
