Default Maybe we could learn something from the German TT group...

Today's attack on the TT.Org website got me thinking. If you take a look at the German TT newsgroup (it's in German, of course), you'll notice that almost every message is prefaced by a friendly hello, and ended with a greeting. I can't recall reading any flames or insults. When opinions or information is questioned, it is always done in a polite and gentlemanly manner.
Now I'll be the first to admit that I personally have gotten drawn into the fray a few times in the past (so spare me the flames), but I've been trying to ignore inflammatory comments, despite the occaisional temptation to do otherwise. George Bush spoke of a "kinder and gentler America" and was ridiculed for it. I thought that the man made a lot of sense and understood his comments completely. Perhaps it's time for a kindler and gentler TT.Org.
It's inevitable that we will disagree or object to the comments of others from time to time. I would suggest that we do our best to ignore outright inflammarory comments. If you wish to disagree with another, do so in a polite manner. If you don't like someone, or you think that they come on too strongly, just let it go. Don't start an arguement with name calling, insults and flames. In the words of the hero and champion for civil rights Rodney King, "Why can't we all just get along?"

Hi everyone!
I would like to start out by saying thank you to Jason Teller and other who help keep this site up and running. You guys are doing a very fine job.
Secondly, I believe that this site has been very valuable to many people out there. It serves both as a social gathering place where experiences are exchanged as well as a forum that is full with rich technical information not found anywhere else (except for the German newsgroup).
I do not think that we need to go to a registration based setup - there will always be those who use inflamatory language, etc. This group has been very good at either ignoring them or posting follow-ups that are proper yet still very polite.
I have to agree with Brad that the German group could be used as a nice model, however, I believe the language barrier also acts as a cultural barrier - they have their own unique internet culture that would be hard to copy.
Ralph

Hi Brad,
being one of the most active members of the german newsgroup, I have to say that the manners aren´t as good as it seems.
OK, it´s different to the tt.org-group, and maybe we won´t see such an attack ever. But germans (me included ;-)) have some difficulties to accept the arguments that other pepole throw into discussion. They always claim that their own opinion is the only one that counts. On the other hand, you won´t find any personal insults on the german pages, you´re right on that.
BTW, there´s a second, more technical reason for the NG to be so gentle: It´s a newsgroup, not a www-board. As the i-net in germany is far away from being as popular as it is in the US (due to very high costs), you can imagine that just PC-pros and people, who really WANT to get to that newsgroup, will also find it.
Bye,
Michael
