Default Synthetic Oil

I asked my dealer about using synthetic oil in my TT. He said Audi does not recommend it. However, his product knowledge was less than impressive and I'm wondering if anyone else has heard or knows otherwise.
Also, the dealer stated that it is not necessary to change the oil after the first 1K miles...5K is fine. Any other opinions on this subject?
I have a silver TT with 700 miles on it...loving every minute of it...
Thanks for your help/opinion.
Rick
Wall, NJ

He was correct about not needing an oil service at 1k miles. As far as synthetic goes, if it were my TT, I would go to synthetic at the 5k maintenance.
Jason Dale
Audi Technician
Ken Garff Motors
Provo, UT

My dealership's Service Manager said that he does recommend synthetic oil to prolong engine life. Specifically, he recommended switching to Mobil 1 at 5000 miles (coming up soon, I'm at 4600 miles now). Also, I thought that he made me a very fair deal on the Mobil 1 ($3.30 per quart).
You can ask your dealer nicely if they will negiotiate a deal with you if you want to do synthetic, but I wouldn't jump their *** if they don't. That is totally up to the discretion of the Service Manager and they shouldn't be putdown if they choose not to do a deal.
Since synthetic oils have higher tolerances(hot/cold) it is a good idea to have it in a turbo engine. You may never need the extra protection but on a hot summer day, running AC at full blast and shooting up a hill in the desert, I certainly want the added protection in my car. As others have said, this is a low cost insurance for your turbo engine.

Default Mobil One at $3.30 is a great deal, over $4.00 at Pep Boys.

However, unless your oil change is free, I am sure they make up the difference somewhere else. Do it yourself. Changing oil is one of the easiest jobs on a car and gets you familiar with it. There is lots of stuff to look at when you are lying on your back under the car. Just make sure you have the dealer do it enough to maintain the warranty.

I would absolutly recommend it. My '89 SAAB turbo has 200K miles on the original turbo, with no sign of giving up. I'll begin using it in my TT at the first service.

Default Why start at 5K miles

Jason,
Why start at the 5K miles mark, is it because this is when you recommend the first oil change or is there something different in the synthetic oil that should be used after break-in, i.e thinner viscousity ? Appreciate your thoughts.

At $3.30 per quart for the Mobil 1, and considering that the labor is free for the first few years, I will definitely do it at the dealer. I had 3 years of auto shop in High School, and can change oil, plugs and the like, but I'd prefer to have a factory trained technician do most or all of my work. They're much more likely to catch a problem than I am. The great Mobil 1 price that the Service Manager generously offered makes it even more worthwhile!

Consensus on the A4 site (at least the 2.8l A4) was to keep the factory oil in the engine for the recommended initial interval. Some of those who didn't developed engines with a thrist for oil. No one was ever able to confirm this, but it's speculated that Audi may use a special break-in oil.
Just thought I'd pass on a rumour. If it were me, I'd keep the original oil for the first 5K, and switch to synthetic.
-steve

I would just hate to keep the initial oil in there for 5K miles since there are a lot metal shavings (small particles of course) in the oil in the beginning. BTW, I had heard that the "break-in Oil" was a myth and was used in the sixties but not anymore.
