Default Spoiler thoughts for the future.

Yes I hate the spoiler like the majority of TT owners do/will however on the positive side for new versions of the TT an elegant spoiler solution must be staring Audi in the face. People suggested the Beetle Turbo type spoiler but as others pointed out there would not be enough downforce due to it's positioning etc.

Here's my idea....you'll need to picture it in your mind or look at a picture.

Imagine a slighlty curved and horizontal line that follows the lines of the boot and joins the top of the rear lights across the boot.

Now imagine a parallel line to this line that runs underneath the Audi Rings but above the end of the boot/trunk leaving say 1cm. This portion between the lines now becomes the spoiler which with redesign of the rear hatch is supported and pivots around it's top part via hydraulics underneath or using another mechanism. Obviously there wouldn't be door type hinges. There's certainly depth in the boot/trunk to accomodate this feature using the Beetle Turbo type mechanism though for safety reasons especially when closing the boot with a load they would have to shrink the boot a bit in length and make the boot hatch thicker at the end with the spoiler...not a big issue?

Now for the spoiler shape itself. The section of the boot it follows is in general the wrong type of curve. As opposed to a curve scooping up, this curve is rolling over. There are two ways around this.

1). Either pivot the spoiler up at a larger angle (I'm not an aerodynamicist!) to get the necessary downforce or..

2). Keep the side profile of the spoiler the same at the edges for the lines of the car and reverse the curve within the spoiler area (so teh curve is accomodated by dipping into the curve)like they do on F1 cars where the rear wing from the side looks square but the wings are angled within it. Agreed on the cosmetic side I'm not sure what it may look like..but it's an idea.

My third and whacky idea which really would look wacky is to use the first suggestion but then dimple the wing like they do with golf ***** to direct airflow...but then we'd end up with a Golf!

Let me know if you think I'm mad! I'm certainly obsessed!!

As a matter of fact (and I recognize that you propose excelent ideas, VictorF), the sole good solution is to introduce a new free mod por old owners and a change in the production of TTs and TTRs: a Boxter's type spoiler, activated only over a certain speed. That's what I call a right solution: AUDI cannot design a car with so clear lines and, one year after, to introduce a spoiler so absolutely ... I even dont find the word ....

Default That's what I mean't..it would pop up..or rather tilt up...

...I'm hopeful they will produce an elegant solution but realistically it'll onll be available (if at all) on new version of the TT in years to come

One thing I thought they could do is make it out of flexible plastic, and with the correct mechanism it could actually change shape as it raises. This would allow the ends to lift more than the centre creating the desired effect. I have heard that Ferrari are working on a similar system for the underneath of their cars to allow for constant downforce regardless of speed.

Regards,
Paul.
