FWD Steering
I have been following this Forum since Sept. 1999 when I decided to buy a
TT for my new car. I should say that I have enjoyed my TT and this Forum
since then.
Now my question is about the steering of FWD TT. When I first got my
car, the steering is very tight and precise. But I noticed that at about 5000 miles
it started to have free play. I took it back to the Audi dealer here at San Jose.
A rep took a test drive with me and told me that this is normal. He said that
the steering will start having free play at about 5000 miles. But I will get the
same tight steering back once the recall modification is done. Now my car has
12000 miles on it and the steering is getting worse. My question to all TT
owners is "Are you experiencing the same thing?" and "Will the recall
modification fix it?"
Thanks.

They found that the front end was out of alignment. Toe, which is supposed to be between -5 and -9 degrees, was actually +2/+3. So I would first start with an alignment. It helped my car dramatically, although I still think the steering lacks a certain sharpness.
Secondly, I would totally ignore the comments made by the rep to whom you demonstrated the issue. The steering will start having some free play at 5K miles? That is TOTAL BULLS@IT! If that were true, it would steer like a tractor by 25K.
You shouldn't need the recall to expect precise steering with no dead spot. I would suggest having them check your alignment.
Let us know how it goes!

I guess having driven an Audi 80 (no power steering) thought me this ;-)
