Does any one know if its a good idea to...

My Audi Dealer has told me that I'd be wrong to install a third party 6 CD Changer (e.g Alpine). 'There not all compatible, he's heared of loads a problems', etc. Bull**** or Not? The Audi 6 CD Changer is £455 inc, in the UK, I can buy a top of the range Alpine or simular for a lot less. Is this guy full of it? Can I fit a third party OK? Are the TT's CD connections already fitted and its a case of plug and play? Plz can anyone shed some light on this situation! Much Oblidged.

Panasonic is the OEM for the TT CD changer. Search the archives, I think someone found an OEM.

He's right but solutions exist....

It would seem that there is no standard for how CD changers connect to Head Units - in the most part you have to take both from the same manufacturer - good for them, crap for the consumer!

autoleads.co.uk, a UK supplier, do a range of Smart Cables which allow different brand components to be connected - some seem to just change the physical connectors, others seem to have some electronics involved.

At present, they list one Smart Cable for the Audi range to allow the following two CD changers to be connected into the standard Audi wiring harness:
