I've got polished aluminum rims (American racing) on my Saturn and they are a bitch to keep clean
I bought them in October and and they were pitted and coroded in Jan. That shows you what road salt will do to a car (MI + WI). It takes a lot of work to keep them clean but they do look sweet when they r clean. I'm guessing that the stock rims on the TT are clearcoated so that you don't have to polish them every other week.

My NM TT originally arrived with polished 17" alloys. These wheels initially looked great, but soon developed a "sparkle effect". Also, smudges would be, at times, nearly impossible to get out. Several other NM owners have also complained of similar problems. Synopsis: these wheels sucked.
Audi swapped them for chromed 17" wheels, and they look much nicer and are far easier to maintain. Of course, when my 225Q Roadster arrives, they're going bye bye along with the NM TT . In summary, avoid the polished alloys.
