For the year 2000, the luxury tax is 5% of the selling price of the car plus other non-excluded taxes or fees, less your trade-in allowance, plus the fair market wholesale value of the trade-in, plus dealer services, minus the luxury tax exemption (for 2000, $38,000). Or more simply, 5% of the remainder of the total cost of the new vehicle and applicable taxes less $38,000. On a 225hp TT (coupe or roadster), this should not be more than several hundred dollars, but you can do the math once you know what the 2001 225hp TTs cost, plus your applicable state's taxes.

Thank you for the feedback and straightening this out. I guess I misunderstood the tax rule. I remember hearing they were going to gradually get rid of it but wasn't sure when that started.

My Political Side is Screaming to Escape!!
Basically, I don't care if the luxury tax cost me only a dollar, it's still a Bulls--t tax levied on us few that work hard, find ourselves in the 28% plus tax range, however, still find a way to reward our hard work and education by treating ourselves to a wonderful car and this is how our government rewards us! A "LUXURY" tax, Gimme a damn break!!!
