Going with a friend to get the Honda S2000(long)
Suddenly my buddy’s 99 eclipse was realized not to be a “sports car” but just a “sporty car”.
He purchased my last hand-me-down an RX-7. Which shortly there after taking delivery started to smoke and smelled of leaking gas. His kids cleaned the aluminum rims with oven degreaser and a brillo pad.
Inside of 2 months the car was a mess. Rust suddenly appeared were there was none months before. All those hours I spent cleaning it with a fine toothcomb down the drain. I guess I’m probably too **** on the cleaning of my car. I was hoping to talk him into my BMW but now he’s to good for a used car. So on Monday I’m going to go give him a ride to pick up his S2000 (Honda). I’d hate to see him buy it, but in that price range they’re really is not a whole lot to choose from. Getting a TT is out of the question since I bought one. I guess I’m not going to tell him that I think the car looks like a Miata on steroids or the inside looks a 16 year old teenager designed it. It’s not a bad looking car though. The good news is I’ll be able to compare it against the tt225 when mine comes in.
In other news, today is the last day that I can make any changes to the car. So after a month of deliberation I decided to change the color on order from Aviator Grey to Silver. I have never had the chance to see the Grey in person. The paint square that is in the dealer brochure is totally different than all the pictures on the Web. The dealer who has several tts on hand has never had anyone order the Aviator Grey. My fear was after waiting months for the car I would be freaked out if I didn’t like the color. I still decide not to go with the Bose system, in my opinion over priced for a CD changer/speaker upgrade.
Has anybody else gone though this same kind of competion with a close friend? Do they stop coming by because of the Audi tt “intimidation factor”? (Hehehhe) I hope I haven’t offended any S2000 owners or the owners of Aviator Grey TT’s out there………..or Bose owners…………..<p>TTKEN ;{

They are very different cars - I wouldn't call the s2000 a commuter car, but rather something that is taken out to really drive hard on the track or early on weekend mornings.
You really have to rev the s2000 to get any performance. This means reving it to a level that is uncomfortable unless you own and know the car (I certainly wasn't willing to do this with him sitting in the right seat).
We'll be down in St. Aug today at the boat launch under the Vilano Bridge and at the Conch House tonight. I won't have my TT with me, tho. And Lake Silver Metallic is the best color for a TT, anyway!

I have the Silver 180q and live in Chicago. A friend of mine has the Honda and another has the Z3. Freeman Thomas was quoted as saying people look like circus bears in the Z3 and did he hit the nail on the head. The Honda is fast and it is a convertible. But, I've had the TT since September and I never tire of looking at it, driving it (just over 17k miles) or showing it off. It's so different. Like the Conch House. God, do I miss the Conch House. Is it me or do women look prettier there? More tanned. More blonde. More something. Man, I gotta go back. Looks like another 4k on the TT sooner than I thought.

The S4 guy is always talking about getting upgrades, and the M3 guy is talking about trading in for hte new M3 when it comes out.
I'm still waiting on my 225C, but am considering waiting further, on a 300C that could compete with the new 340hp M3...
Now I'll preface this by saying that I've only test-driven each car... both had been broken in by their previous owners. The TT-FWD was smooth, comfortable, lush, and absolutely gorgeous. The S2000 was angry, agressive, grippy, and an absolute screamer.
After my TT drive I got out and told the wife... "That is one nice car. Pliable, forgiving, and plenty of power."
After my S2000 drive I got out (visibly shaking with the adrenaline pumping through my veins) and told the wife... "You would HATE me in that car."
The S2000 is as pure a sports car as can be had for the price. The rev-happy engine screams with delight the harder you push it. I found that 40mph curves were carved to pieces at 80mph with NO instability or even the slightest hint of pushing the limits. With the perfect 50/50 weight distribution and super-grippy tires, the car hugged the road no matter what I threw at it. The acceleration at the high end of the rev-band (after VTEC initiation) was heart pounding. Cruising in 4th gear at 50mph, downshift to 3rd and punch it... 80mph in the time it takes to look down at the speedo. Comparing its acceleration and skidpad numbers, the closest car is the Corvette Hardtop and thats another $10,000.
I found the interior comfortable (but I'm 5'9") and felt that it held me in place during cornering like few cars I've driven. The exterior may be a little plain (aren't all non-NSX Honda's?), but the classic long-nose, short rear deck appearance whispers Jaguar E-Type to me.
New comments:
I've since driven the S2000 twice more. I find it more entrhalling each time and the looks keep growing on me. I now think it is a sleek and stylish roadster with classic proportions. The simplicity of its form and function speak volumes to me. Based on the significant price and performance differences, I've decided on an S2000 over an Audi TT Roadster. I ordered my 2001 Honda S2000 a couple weeks ago (hoping they'll bring over that electric blue paint that is available in Japan this year). I'll smile every time I see a TT Coupe or Roadster, but I won't be an owner for the time being.
An S2000 is my car of choice for more reasons than one. However, I can't begruge anyone who chooses the TT because it is gorgeous and combines practicality and fun remarkably well. It's just not worth the extra money on my budget and with my priorities.
Guess the wife will hate me,
Stephen
