Default ESP finally operated 2 times (more)

I wrote in this forum a few days ago that the ESP was not absolutely necessary and had never operated that far on my car. Now it has, but I still think it's not absolutely necessary, just useful.
It operated 2 times in the same conditions in fact.
I was in a narrow curve at about 50 mph and progressively crushing the throttle on the floor.
I did not notice any (strong)over nor under steer, but an increasing slip rate of the 4 wheels alltogether, thanks to the quattro system.
The ESP suddenly operated (the yellow light flashed)by reducing the engine power to reduce the slip rate.I did not feel any selective braking of one or 2 wheels. In that case I would have felt vibrations in these wheels.
I did the same test with my A8 4.2 quattro several month ago (no ESP) and in fact its handling was almost the same : the 4 wheels slip together and you just adjust the slip rate with the throttle to stay within the road limits.
I think ESP does not allow you to reach the very last limits of the car. But it must be useful on cars with very tough suspensions (like the TT) on bumpy roads to correct swerves due to these bumps.
Franck

Experienced similar effects - no braking just a reduction in power

I agree on your ESP thoughts, I have seen it on a 270 degree bend at about 60 mph, it seems to kill power to the front wheels as the front tucks in very quickly, quite useful in an emergency, but you have to be really pushing the car to get it to lose grip this much. (3rd gear, foot to the floor and about a quarter / half of a turn of lock.) The car feels very balanced (with a little understeer) up to and including the time when the ESP kicks in.

I am still not really sure of what ESP really is? Is it ABS for each wheel individually, and traction control for each wheel individually, in conjunction with the limited slip differentials? Or does it work differently?

Default individual wheel braking but not real individual traction control (operates on engine)

Might act on Haldex also, but I'm really not sure of it.
In fact ESP compares the true trajectory of the car with the theoretical trajectory that should be obtained with the actual wheel position and acts on engine power and on individual brakes to minimize the difference between the 2.
The individual brake action is interesting since even a F1 pilot couldn't do that (would request 1 brake pedal per wheel !!!)
Franck
