Default I ordered Unorthodox Racing underdrive pulleys for my 180Q...

The entire kit (3 pulleys) is $600 (Can.) and was told a solid 15hp gain. The main pulley is for the crank and it is under 1 pound heavy compared to the factory's which is 5 pounds. Its only 20% smaller and I was told that there is no difference in engine/component performance.

It will take 2 weeks to get it.

Any comments appreciated...

Default I imagine that would yield a noticeable improvement in throttle response...

All that reciprocating mass removed, plus a lightened load on the engine....

Audi should follow the S2000 approach and make some of the components electrically-driven, rather than pulley-driven. (Okay, now that I think about Audi's electrical quality control, maybe they shouldn't)....

Awesome idea - Definitely do keep us posted!

Default Hard to believe some of the claims

15 HP by just making the pulleys from aluminum?
Hmmmm, and maybe 30 HP from some expensive spark plug wires. That would make our 180's into 225's without all the extra boost, intercoolers, etc.

Without getting into a rotating inertia discussion, $600 Canadian ($400+ US?) might be difficult to spend if they only claimed 2-4 HP.

A suggestion: Just before you install the pulleys, do some timed tests accelerating from a speed equivalent to 2000 rpm to a speed equivalent to 6000 rpm. Start the run below that speed by 10-15 KPH and go a bit past the 6000 rpm equivalent KPH to get accurate times.
Do this 5 or so times in the same place in 2nd and then in 3rd gear. Throw out the fastest and slowest runs, and average the others for each gear. Hey, if you are gutsy, and the QEW is empty, try 4th gear too.

Change (only) the pulleys, and repeat the 5 runs in the same place as your "before" runs. How much difference?

By the way, a solid steel slug 5.0 inches in diameter and 0.9 inches thick weighs 5.0 lbs.
Does the factory crank pulley really weigh 5 lbs?

If I sound skeptical, you read me correctly.

Default Your in Toronto aren't you??? I think that 15hp might be high but it makes more sense on this...

car than it would on a normally aspirated car. A friend dynoed his VR6 GTI before and after a single pulley was changed and he got a smooth 6hp more. Now he changed just one and its not a turbo charged car. This leads me to believe that 12-13 is possible.

Your advice is great on the timed runs... I'll let you know...

It sounds like your from Toronto. Email me directly and we'll talk TT's.
