Default Unintended service: turbo bog

On the way to work this morning my 180 Coupe FWD bogged down while accelerating. It has never done this before. It normalized but the car does not feel as peppy under hard acceleration as it used to.

Anyone else have this problem? More later.<p>Ivan

Default I've noticed this...

Sometimes when attempting to quickly accelerate, the turbo just doesn't kick in when it should. It's like it was caught off guard or something. It's very inconsistent, but seems to happen more if I start off in 2nd from a slow roll.

I've only had mine a month, so I wasn't sure if it was me, or it's still settling in, or ?<p><a href="http://registry.audiworld.com/audi/registry/details.asp?car=4626"><img src="http://homepage.mac.com/galaxian/.Pictures/mmttsig.jpg" alt="Click here for my registry entry." border=0></a>

Default Mine has always had lag like that...

Never having driven a turbo car before, I expected some lag. When the car was brand new, it was far worse, but as the engine has loosened up, the turbo seems to have loosened up with it. I can still catch it off guard with a quick stab at the gas, though.

Default Mine has always been fine. It was like the scene in Star Wars when Han Solo...

is being so cocky and tells Chewbacca to hit the hyperdrive and it bogs down and never goes, with corresponding sound effects.

I, of course, expect the dealer to find nothing wrong. And I have a very good dealer.<p>Ivan

Default The star wars thing is right ...

I caught mine off guard, and pretty often at that. I'll punch in the pedal, and it picks up slowly, but once it hits 2500 rpm or something like that, it picks up and runs.

I still need to learn how to drive right. Moving out on first with consistent power output is not happening since my clutch - throttle coordination is off.

Any suggestions?

Default I get it up above 2500 rpm in first ASAP, then shift at about 5K.

Default Checked the computer, checked the boost pressure, nothing wrong. How surprising. ;)

Default Re: The star wars thing is right ...

What you are all describing is very similar to what happens in my outgoing Impreza WRX. The turbo only kicks in at about 3000rpm.

If I try and pull away quickly, and I don't quite give it enough gas, then it bogs down until the revs get up into the boost range.

In the Impreza the power deficiency is very pronounced because of the massive difference in power and torque between the boost assisted engine and the normally aspirated engine. To give you a clue what I mean, the same 2.0 litre engine without any turbo only puts out about 112bhp. The turbo engine puts out 276bhp.

So, for those 1-2 secs while you are under no boost, the engine behaves like it only has 112bhp, which means it bogs down big time compared to what you are used to.

Interestingly, when I test drove the 225Q, I found that this wasn't a big problem, as Audi appear to have done a lot of work to ensure that off turbo power delivery is very well matched to on-turbo power. The transition between the two is almost seamless. This is maybe not possible with an unmodified 180(Q).

I'd be insterested to hear if any of the guys with chipped 180s have the same problems with bogging down.
