History of the "Wave" as I remember it . . .
Late 50' or 60's - 356 headlight flash phenom first noted. (Believe only German cars at that time had headlight flasher as we know it.)
Mid 60's - notice old ladies in Mustangs waving to "sports cars" . . .(no offense Jason!)
1970's - Motorcyclists waving - but not to BMW riders . . .
As nears as I can remember, waving was restricted to "marque" only exchanges originally. (i.e. MG to MG; Healy to Healy; 356 to 356 etc. (I think Jag owners would "tip" the de-rigor wool cap.)
As the automotive kingdom became a "ours" (merikan) against theirs (furrin') phenom most drivers of non-merkin marques would wave to other non-merkin marques.
Means little now, though I will offer an appreciative "thumbs up" or "OK" to a particularly nice ride.
(Not to be confused with the EIEIO zip habit of waving to EVERY other vee-hickle on a rural road.
ps. a good idea to wave back in case you are in need of help)
100 point bonus to whoever can tell me origin of the term "merkin" (here irreverently used in place of "American")
