Default OT: PC Help Needed - 'Illegal Operation / Page Faults'

My computer is acting pretty hosed. I ran a defrag on the hard drive this morning and now I'm getting "This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If the problem persists, contact the program vendor" .... Then in details, " MSIMN caused an invalid page fault in module at 0000:be001060 ..." etc., etc., etc. So far it happens when I try to open a message in Outlook (although the program starts up and gets new mail fine), and in Photoshop 5.5. Obviously, Netscape is still working. Any thoughts? Caused by the defrag? Everything seemed to end fine on both drives. TIA.

Default Re: OT: PC Help Needed - 'Illegal Operation / Page Faults'

This is one of those errors that could be any program either trying to execute an illegal instruction or referencing a swapped out page in storage that isn't completely returned to the program. Could even be a bad memory chip.

If you ran a scandisk (assuming Windows 9x) and errors were found and corrected, it could be that a binary is screwed up. Did you recently install new software? If so, remove it, reboot and try again. If you moved your PC, a memory stick may be loose so open it up and reseat the chips. Since it's happening in Outlook, uninstall Outlook after saving your mail folders, reboot, then reinstall - this might overlay any bad binary files with new ones. Hope this helps.

Default Thanks, I'll try reinstalling the affected software. Unfortunately, IE is messed up, too, and it...

doesn't seem to be able to fix itself. Scandisk found no errors and I haven't recently installed any software. I'll also give it a shot just shutting down for a bit (versus restarting again). Pretty weird. At least most of the software I've run into that isn't working is fairly easily reinstalled.

No, vanilla 98. I should have left it alone since it was working fine before the defrag :-(

Default Go to www.windowsupdate.com

there's another SP for IE 5.01 and of course IE 5.5 - that should repair the IE problem - in theory!

I also have Scandisk run whenever my win98 machines have been idle for 10mins - preemptive strike theory

good luck

Default Some other things you might do is make sure your cache is cleaned out,

your Temp and Windows Temp directories are emptied (making sure no other programs are open at the time) and then running your scan disk again. You should also go to the Microscoft website and search for MSIMN. You'll find a list of error messages and what to do with them. I pasted the link below...hope it works.

Good luck.<ul><li><a href="http://search.microsoft.com/us/SearchMS25.asp?so=RECCNT&qu=msimn&boolean=ALL&i=00 &i=02&i=04&i=06&i=08&i=01&i=03&i=05&i=07&i=09&p=1& nq=NEW">LInk to Microsoft Errors...hope it works</a></li></ul>

Default Thanks. I'm going to work on it again this afternoon. I finally gave up last night when I started

getting page faults on Explorer itself. At that point I couldn't even get the machine to shut down gracefully. I'm at a loss on this one .... Guess I could always reinstall Windows and see if that works.

Default more than likely a corrupt message store

Could be a few other things. Does it give any module information or just "invalid page fault in module "" at 000xxxx? Shouldn't be hard to fix, let me know and I'll be glad to help.

Default At this point it's giving me 'illegal operation' and 'page fault' messages on Explorer when I try to

boot the machine. Seems like it gets to a certain point before it crashes, so I was thinking that if I boot in safe mode and disable virus checking and the various assorted other things that are loaded during startup that I might be able to at least bring the machine up. The problem seems to have expanded to Windows itself since I can't even get Windows up fully now.
