Oil fill-mark on the dipstick question.
I mentioned that my handbrake button was sticking, and they offered to replace it. OK, no problem.
I had it done this AM. When I got in, and spoke to the service guy, I said that I was smelling oil burning at stops, and for them to check the filter area, etc, to see if there was residue left from the recent oil change. I didn't see any drops on the garage floor.
When I got the car back, they said there was no oil residue anywhere. (Why did I still smell oil burns?), but that the oil level was too *high*. They drained out 1/2 qt. said the level on the dipstick is supposed to be at the half-way mark on the indicator on the stick. They asked me if I added oil, and I said they did it that way. They apologized, and I left.
But I left thinking, is that true?
I didn't pull my manual to check it, but that seems odd to me.
Am I off base here?
I still smelled oil after leaving the dealer. Oh well, I guess I'll crawl under it this weekend, pull the bottom cover off, and clean it.
I too had a burning oil smell after having my oil changed at 5k. It's since gone away. I figured it was residue, but I havent' really check for leaks as you have to remove the underbelly pan. One thing that is quite common on 1.8T is valve cover gasket leaks - but I checked and didn't see any.

http://tech.vw.com/vwpdf/v170101.pdf</a
