Default Anyone understand the problem the guy had in European Car long term update?

He said he got the 180 TTQC on to some low traction surface and when he stopped he couldn't start again. The ECU cut the engine power when he tried to move. In the end he had to be towed out by a 4x4. What was that all about?

Default Sounds like a driver error to me. When you screw up, blame the car...

All those TT's in the snow can't be wrong.

Default nah, I read the article, and it sounds to me like (more)

like he had stock tires on the car (crap in anything but dry pavement), and ESP was on. So, tires start slipping because they're not made for snow and ice, ESP kicks in, the more you throttle, the more ESP takes over, and eventually, ESP kills the throttle, and ultimately, upon trying hard enough, kills the engine.

As a frequent quattro driver, I know where the ESP switch is.

So if he'd just switched off ESP he'd have got out just fine?

Default No, I wasn't there. You don't hear Germans after winter complaining about getting stuck to much...

I don't know about their long term car, but to blame a whole design is weak journalism in my book.

Default not a chance. (more)

He would have just slipped and slid all over the place. The tires, I suspect, were stock Potenzas. Try driving with those things in snow or ice. Very quickly, you realize, you CAN'T drive. You just slide all over the place. Even turning off ESP (or ASR, if he didn't have ESP), would have proved fruitless.

Default I don't have the insight you do regarding the incident and cannot speculate...

in as much detail as you. I don't worship EC staffer's driving or writing ability either. It is a bummer he got towed.

The car he is testing doesn't have ESP, it's a 2000 Quattro.

Default I don't have any insight, I'm just speculating as to what happened, HOWEVER (more)

I *do* know that the car had Potenzas on it, at least, assuming they didn't lie in the article. It is stated that the car has had no changes done to it (as far as changing stock equipment), and when they issued their first article about the car back when they got it, it had Potenzas on it, which was mentioned in the original article.

So, from this information, I'm guessing they still had the potenzas on, and the description of the problem sounds identical to what everyone else I've talked to who have tried driving in the snow with the Potenzas, Quattro or no Quattro.
