POLL: CHIP.. GIAC, APR or MTM.. Which one would you go with and why?
Don't be fooled when someone tells you that MTM has a direct connection to Audi in Germany, that is just not true. Meyer, the M in MTM used to work for Quattro GmbH, the tuning arm of Audi of Germany. That was more than 10 years ago! Others will tell you that MTM uses the Audi of Germany wind tunnel to test their stuff out . . . so do 100's of other companies! That is how large companies recoup their investments in those multi-million dollar wind tunnels!
Audi of Germany will not and can not give out the source code for their ECU's. MTM like APR and Garrett and SuperChips and AmD and all of the other chip tuners throughout the world read the code from the Audi ECU's. Nobody is getting that code for free from an Audi Engineer!
You will not go wrong by getting any of the these 3 ECU's. The claimed numbers are all very similar, but Garrett is the least conservative of the 3, where I believe that APR is the most conservative. MTM chips are created in Germany then fine-tuned at Hoppen Motorsports in Florida by one or two engineers. Garrett Lim does all of the chip tuning himself and APR has 2 or 3 engineers on their staff.
MTM does not do any custom programming if you think you might need that in the future. APR does and so does Garrett.
No matter which chip you go with, make certain you eventually get a spare ECU. I know that APR sells the EMCS module and I am sure it works great. It can't do anything for you if the dealer decides to swap ECU's because they can't figure out something and think an ECU swap will solve a problem! If they do that then you are out the money you just paid for the chip! Not worth it to me.
Good luck in your search.
