Default My lift-off rattle may not be the DV. Opinions, please.

Hi Guys,

As a new TT owner, I was delighted to find this forum. I'm hoping some of you can offer a fresh insight, since my problems with the dreaded lift-off rattle have been a little different than those described here. I've searched the TT Forum and I've read all the posts concerning the problem. The consensus seems to be that the Bailey Motorsport DV-30 is the solution. I haven't been that lucky.

I bought my 2001 225 TT Quattro in October. Within a week, odd noises began, including the lift-off rattle. The car was delivered with the Bosche/Audi "H" diverter valve. Audi replaced it twice before trying the Bosche/Audi "N" valve. None solved the problem.

My rattle occurs at any RPM above 3000 and the duration (and to a lesser extent, the loudness) is directly related to how hard I'm accelerating as I upshift. If I drive very sedately, there's hardly any noise at all, but where's the fun in that? As has been described before, the sound is closest to a heatshield buzz. (There was an unpleasant raspy hissing as I accelerated as well, but I never experienced the much-reported honk.)

After consulting the forum, I had a DV-30 installed. When I saw the stainless steel diverter valve sitting where the black plastic Bosche used to be, I thought my problems were over. Alas, it was not to be. The raspy hissing is essentially no more, but the lift-off rattle is still with me. And it may be my imagination, but I think the rattle has actually gotten slightly louder over the course of the several weeks I've had the Bailey. It's hard so say for sure; it could be my growing frustration with the unhealthy noise.

My TT has a little less than 3000 miles on it, so I haven't pushed it too hard. Yet, the noise can be very intrusive with even moderate acceleration. The turbo boost is quite brisk, and I can't fault the TT's performance otherwise.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I'd be most grateful for any help.

Dan

Default I went through this as well. The dealer tried three times to fix the heat shield.

I finally fixed it my self in 20 minutes by reaching under the car while onstands and finding the loose component. It was the top end of the shield that had come loose. I managed to reconnect it. I have had no issues to date.

BTW, the lead mechanic at my dealership today told me that on the 2001 225's, if the DV fails you get a check engine light - unlike with previous models.

Default I'm assuming you've checked the heat shields, exhaust, etc...

for rattles and leaks? It would be good to get the car on a lift and carefully eliminate all possible souces of noise. Who knows, you may have a new noise no one has yet experienced. Raspy hissing noise sounds like exhaust to me, but I could be wrong. Have you had your dealer go over these problems, besides the DV?

With regard to the Bailey DV-30, I ran one for 7K miles and replaced it with a Forge valve last weekend. The Bailey still works fine, and looks like the day it went in the car. However, I did occasionally get a little chatter from the valve in certain lift-off situations... usually low-rpm in 1st gear. There have been very few Bailey failures (maybe two that I can remember), but who knows, you may just have a bum valve.

Where are you? if you're in the bay area, you're welcome to try my spare Bailey in your car.

Not in the case of our TTC and TTR. Both failed and neither caused the light to come on.

Which is not untypical of the rocket scientists who wrench for dealers. It makes me nervous that the guy is going to replace my oil cap assembly tomorrow, cause he is talking about pulling of some serious parts to do so.

Default I'm having the same type of noise I think...

I'm getting a whisping or hissing upon liftoff of throttle only on hard acceleration though. I was lucky enough to have access to the vag software via blueshirTT and I got an error code that links to air leak, emissions and air hose. I will be at my dealer from next wednesday to friday for this and a few more things.

You guys keep referring to lift off. I thought only airplanes lifted off. By lift off, what do you mean? Thanks
