My lift-off rattle may not be the DV. Opinions, please.
As a new TT owner, I was delighted to find this forum. I'm hoping some of you can offer a fresh insight, since my problems with the dreaded lift-off rattle have been a little different than those described here. I've searched the TT Forum and I've read all the posts concerning the problem. The consensus seems to be that the Bailey Motorsport DV-30 is the solution. I haven't been that lucky.
I bought my 2001 225 TT Quattro in October. Within a week, odd noises began, including the lift-off rattle. The car was delivered with the Bosche/Audi "H" diverter valve. Audi replaced it twice before trying the Bosche/Audi "N" valve. None solved the problem.
My rattle occurs at any RPM above 3000 and the duration (and to a lesser extent, the loudness) is directly related to how hard I'm accelerating as I upshift. If I drive very sedately, there's hardly any noise at all, but where's the fun in that? As has been described before, the sound is closest to a heatshield buzz. (There was an unpleasant raspy hissing as I accelerated as well, but I never experienced the much-reported honk.)
After consulting the forum, I had a DV-30 installed. When I saw the stainless steel diverter valve sitting where the black plastic Bosche used to be, I thought my problems were over. Alas, it was not to be. The raspy hissing is essentially no more, but the lift-off rattle is still with me. And it may be my imagination, but I think the rattle has actually gotten slightly louder over the course of the several weeks I've had the Bailey. It's hard so say for sure; it could be my growing frustration with the unhealthy noise.
My TT has a little less than 3000 miles on it, so I haven't pushed it too hard. Yet, the noise can be very intrusive with even moderate acceleration. The turbo boost is quite brisk, and I can't fault the TT's performance otherwise.
Does anyone have any suggestions? I'd be most grateful for any help.
Dan
With regard to the Bailey DV-30, I ran one for 7K miles and replaced it with a Forge valve last weekend. The Bailey still works fine, and looks like the day it went in the car. However, I did occasionally get a little chatter from the valve in certain lift-off situations... usually low-rpm in 1st gear. There have been very few Bailey failures (maybe two that I can remember), but who knows, you may just have a bum valve.
Where are you? if you're in the bay area, you're welcome to try my spare Bailey in your car.
