Default OT: Fuel gauge problem

When In started up my car today the fuel gauge did not move. About 5 minutes later, it then"woke up" ans showed that i had a 1/2 tank of gas.

Anyone ever had this happen?

With the oil gauge on my Ranger.. took it in and Ford replaced the mechanism that measured the level of the oil.

Default Re: OT: Fuel gauge problem

Yes, mine does this everyday. It comes to life when I hit the first bump, or flick it. Temp gauge has started to do the same thing. Lots of quirky **** for a brand new 42Kbuck car. Just had the oil cap mechanism replaced (500 miles total on odometer) when the plastic holder that it turns to was found broken. I discovered the oil cap was a spinner. I wonder what other aggravating, exasperating things await me prior to hitting 1000 miles on the od. I found myself eyeing my trade at the dealer today wondering if I had $#%@ed up by buying this ride.

Default Naw..

I think this happens with all cars, possibly. I had the same problem with my Ranger, as I said, and they seemed like it was no big deal.. happens all the time.. just a cheap piece that breaks.

Default Yes, this is a common problem on TTs

As is the "metronome" like swinging back and forth which has happened to several, including me. Sometimes my TT fails to see any gas used until its down to half a tank. Refilling the tank seems to fix it.

Right now my fuel gauge is _completely_ broken (ran out of gas and it still says full). Now, down to half a tank and still says full.
Next service appointment I'm going to have it replaced.

Default OK ... this is going to be the last time I'm going to post a fix to this problem ...

my TTQ Coupe did the same thing ... gas gauge would fluctuate from full to half-full in a New York minute. I couldn't trust the gauge at all.

AoA has released a statement concerning the gas gauges for the A4 in which the contact points of the sensor unit in the gas gauge can mis-read the level of fuel based on the sulfur content of the gasoline. You can replace the sensor units all you want, but eventually the sulfur content will build-up and most likely you'll have the same problem.

OK ... here's my fix. LOWER the sulfur content of your gas! How? Go to your local Target or KMart and go to the automotive section and purchase a bottle of "STP Gas Treatment" - usually costs $0.79 per bottle. Put a bottle of this stuff in your tank before you fillup and the cleaner gas should help the contact points of the sensor unit.

I also usually put in a bottle of "Outlaw" Octane boost for good measure - helps with the gas mileage.

In any event, I HAVE NOT HAD ANY PROBLEMS WITH MY GAS GAUGE SINCE DEPLOYING THIS FIX. I SWEAR!

I would recommend that you try this for the next 3 or 4 gas fillups. After that, you can use a bottle once a month.

Default thank you, panic this am....

My roadster has only 150 miles. I had just filled it... and it read zero. Kept my fingers crossed to the station and it only required 6 gallons.. still registered zero, then "woke up" about 7 miles later. The mileage tracker appears dependable because it said I had 250 miles tto go based on usage. Ditto on frustration.

Default A TT sure as heck ain't a FORD and I'm suprised you would even compare the two.

I run AMOCO low sulfer Ultimate 93 octane and I DO have this problem on ocasion too. I'm willing to try Hank's fix. After all, it's cheaper than a gallon of gas!

Default yeah, more times than I can count

3 new clusters, finally new tank sensors; that cured it but oh yeah, then the gas started leaking out...

I'm in a bad mood, sorry... my car is doing it's best Exxon Valdez impersonation - only with gas..
