Default Brief explanation.

Formula 1: 3.0-liter normally aspirated engines built by Honda, Ferrari, Mercedes, BMW, Renault, Jaguar and Ford. Each chassis is built by the team, constructed of carbon fiber and other composites, flat bottomed (no ground effects). Races exclusively on road courses on five continents, in 15 countries. Probably the most popular form of motorsports in the world. The winner of this series is called the World Champion. Top drivers include Michael Schumacher, David Coulthard, Mika Hakkinen, Jacques Villeneuve and Rubens Barrichello.

CART: 2.65-liter turbocharged V8 engines from Toyota, Honda, Ford and Ilmor. Chassis are "customer" chassis from builders Reynard and Lola, with ground-effects tunnels. Heavier than F1 cars. Races on a mix of road courses and ovals. U.S.-based series, but also races in Canada, Mexico, Japan, Germany, England and Australia. Top drivers include Michael Andretti, Paul Tracy, Gil de Ferran, Max Papis and Roberto Moreno.

IRL: 3.5-liter normally aspirated V8 engines built by Oldsmobile and Infiniti. Flat-bottomed cars built by G-Force and Dallara. Races exclusively on ovals in the U.S. Currently the sanctioning body for the Indy 500. Top drivers include Greg Ray, Sam Hornish Jr., Al Unser Jr., Eddie Cheever, Buddy Lazier and Scott Sharp.

Probably more than you wanted to know...

Default No, no, no!!! F1 uses turbo engines, and.....

only some are "road" courses (Monaco, Spa) The rest are on tracks (Silverstone, Monza, etc.,)

Default There haven't been turbo engines in F1 since 1988...

Currently all engines are required to be 3 liters and naturally aspirated. All of the current engines happen to be V10s.

Default Also, I think that CART engines allow for more boost withour hindering the displacement ...

which is only possible with a turbo engine.
